Day #39 - 10/28/14 - Unit 2: Lesson 3 Part II

Good Morning 6th Graders,
Today is a ‘D’ day, so we will go to Gym. Make sure that you have your gym clothes, deodorant, and all other materials you will need for Block 1. Then take out your Book Notes on Chapter 11. I would like to see them first thing this morning. Last pick up an Ipad for your Triad group and work on the P2P.
                             Thank you,
                          Mrs. Sargent & Mr. T.
P2P: Have you ever thought about where the customs and traditions of Halloween began? Where do you think Halloween comes from?

For Unit 2 Lesson 3 Part II

  • I can collaborate with my peers to determine themes in the myth of Cronus.
  • I can explain how a theme in Cronus is connected to a theme in The Lightning Thief.
Activity #1
Add the word 'Theme' to your Word Catcher.
Key Questions:
Who has heard of this word before?
What is the meaning of the word 'theme'?

A theme is a significant idea or lesson conveyed in the text. Theme is an important message the author conveys through the details or events.
  • Parent-Child Relationships
  • A mother will put her love for her children above every other relationship.
What do you notice between the first statement and the second?

The 1st is an example of a topic.
The 2nd is an example of a thematic statement.
  •  A thematic statement is expressed as a complete idea.
  • It answers the question: What idea or lesson does the story convey about the topic?
Triad Envelope Activity
  • Each envelope has 11 slips inside.
  • Pull out a slip one person at a time.
  • Read the slip out loud to your Triad Group
  • Decide if it is an example of a topic or a thematic statement.
  • See if you can match up the topic with the correct thematic statement.

Activity #2
  • Read aloud the myth of Cronus
What themes are conveyed in the myth of Cronus? Refer to Lesson 3 page 9.
  • In your Triad Group discuss which themes you see in the myth of Cronus
  • On your white board, write the theme and thematic statement based on the myth of Cronus
  • Choose 1 representative from your group to share what you wrote.
  • Be prepared to answer follow questions from the audience.

Homework:
Complete the Exit Ticket (Lesson 3 Page 11 or page 12, you choose)
