Activity #1
Movie - Freak the Mighty (Part 3)
1 Hour 5 min - The End

Directions:

  • While you are watching you should be able to find a minimum of 5 similarities, and 5 differences.
  • You will record the similarities and differences on the graphic organizer using the Literary Elements vocabulary, such as: Setting, character, point of view, & plot - (Omit, Insert, Change)
Important: Focus on the Literary Elements we have studied.
  • Characterization - Are the characters developed in the movie the same as the book?
  • Setting - How do the settings compare? Include the way you envisioned the setting in the book to what you see in the movie.
  • Point of View - Does the movie use the same point of view as the book?
  • Plot - How do the events in the movie compare to the events in the book? Focus on the larger more important events and not the small details. Ask yourself, "Did the movie omit, insert, or change any of the plot events?" Focus on the following parts of plot.
    • Climax
    • Falling Action
    • Resolution
  • Conflict - What struggles are Max and Kevin facing?

Writing Strategy - Constructing a written response with:
  1. Introduction
  2. Claim (about both the book and movie)
  3. Evidence (from both the book and movie)
  4. Reflection/Conclusion

Analysis of Similarities & Differences
Drafting paragraphs to write about similarities & Differences between the book & the Movie

Example:

There are many similarities between the book, “Freak the Mighty” and the movie, “The Mighty”. The first similarity worth noting is the way the characters are portrayed and developed throughout the story. In the book and in the movie Max feels like he is stupid and does not have a brain.  HE lives with his grandparents because is mom is dead and his dad is in prison. In a like manner, Kevin believes he is a freak because of his physical disability. He is super smart and he talks like a dictionary in the film and in the novel. Another similarity between the book nd the movie is the plot, specifically the event where Max and Kevin go to the fireworks. In both the story and the movie the boys have an encounter with a character named Tony D. which leads to them being chased down. In this scene Kevin acts as the brain telling Max what to do, and Max acts as the body carrying Kevin. They have to work together to save each other from Tony.  Overall, I think the movie does a good job of recreating the plot from the novel for movie goers. If you like the book, you will probably enjoy the film.

There are many differences between the book, “Freak the Mighty” and the movie, “The Mighty”. The first major difference between the book and the movie is the way Max and Kevin’s friendship begins. In the book their friendship begins when Max helps Kevin get a toy ornithopter out of a tree.  It is this small act of kindness that starts their friendship in the novel, but in the movie their friendship starts when Kevin becomes Max’s tutor. Kevin then gives Max money to take him to the fireworks. Another difference between the two is the setting. When reading the book I picture a small run down town, and in the movie the setting is a large heavy populated city. In my opinion the book does a better job telling the story of Max and Kevin becoming Freak the Mighty. I recommend reading the book before watching the movie.

Activity #1
Evaluate Writing
I can evaluate my own writing to get a better understanding of what I do well, and what I still need to work on.

Remember:
  • Focus on the Literary Elements we have studied when thinking about the similarities and differences.
Focus on the larger more important events and not the small insignificant details.

Each paragraph should have
  1. 1 point - Introduction
  2. 1 point - Claim
  3. 1 point - Evidence (from both the book and movie)
  4. 1 point - Reflection
  5. 1 point - Mechanics = Capitals, punctuation, sentence structure
Each paragraph is worth 5 points total.

What did you do well in your writing?
What are you already getting better at?
What do you still need to work on?

Example:

There are many similarities between the book, “Freak the Mighty” and the movie, “The Mighty”. The first similarity worth noting is the way the characters are portrayed and developed throughout the story. In the book and in the movie Max feels like he does not have a brain until Freak comes along, and he worries that people will think he is a butthead. Kevin is super smart and he talks like a dictionary in the film and in the novel. He is also still battling a physical disability and has to use crutches. Another similarity between the book and the movie is the plot event where the boys go to the fireworks and millpond. In both the story and the movie Max and Kevin have a run-in with Tony D. In order to escape Kevin acts as the brain telling Max what to do, and Max acts as the body carrying Kevin. I think the movie does a good job of recreating the novel for movie goers.

I recommend reading the book before watching the movie.

    Activity #2
    Analysis of Similarities & Differences
    Writing to Compare and Contrast
    a book & a Movie

Kevin then gives Max money to take him to the fireworks. Another difference between the novel and the film is the setting. When reading the book I picture a small run down town, but in the movie the setting is a large heavy populated city. Furthermore, the book takes place in the summertime, but the movie is set during the school year. In my opinion the book does a better job telling the story of Max and Kevin becoming Freak the Mighty. I recommend reading the book before watching the movie.
