Day #16 - 9/29/15 - Learning Stations: Annotating a text, Frayer Models, Responding to literature, Blogging, & Selecting Guided Reading Books

Good Morning Sixth Graders,
    Today is an ‘A’ Day so we will go to Gym. Please enter the room quietly and make sure you have all your materials. Be sure you order your lunch. Next, I want you to compare your ELA notebook with the people at your table. Work together to see if anyone is missing something that should be in their notes. 
          Then participate in"Trivia Tuesday." Pick up a trivia card from the music stand. Then take turns asking and answering trivia questions with the other students at your table. Be sure to communicate in a quiet voice.

Use evidence from the text to support your thinking.

* What is the inciting incident that starts the rising action? 
* Identify one of the conflicts for your protagonist(s)?
Is it man vs. self, man vs. man, or man vs. nature? Use evidence from the text to support your thinking?

  • Use your independent reading book and a dictionary to complete the Frayer model for 5 of your vocabulary words.

  • Log on to the ELA blog and Create a new post. Respond to the following Prompt.

9/29   Literary Elements: Figurative Language


  • Figurative language is when words go beyond their literal meaning!
  • Describing something by comparing it with something else

  • Simile
A simile uses the words “like” or “as” to compare 
one object or idea with another 
Example: busy as a bee, You played like a beast.

  • Metaphor

The metaphor states a fact or draws a verbal picture by the use
of comparison. A simile would say you are like something; 
a metaphor is more positive - it says you are something. 
Example: You are a beast.

  • Personification

A figure of speech in which human characteristics are given 
to an animal or an object.
Example: My teddy bear gave me a hug. 

  • Alliteration

The repetition of the same initial letter, sound, or group
 of sounds in a series of words. Alliteration includes 
tongue twisters.
Example: She sells seashells by the seashore.

  • Onomatopoeia

The use of a word to describe or imitate a natural sound or 
the sound made by an object or an action.
Example: snap crackle pop

  • Hyperbole

An exaggeration that is so dramatic that no one would believe
the statement is true. Often used to make a point. Tall tales are hyperboles.
Example: He was so hungry, he ate that whole
cornfield for lunch, stalks and all.

  • Clichés

A cliché is an expression that has been used so often that it
has become trite and sometimes boring.
Example: Many hands make light work.

          I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. We will continue Learning Stations this week as well as reading Freak the Mighty. Please make sure you have all your materials for the morning. Then work on the point to ponder. When you finish you may work on a madlib with a friend. IF YOUR SOCIAL STUDIES MINI RESEARCH WAS NOT HANDED IN YOU MAY NOT WORK ON A MADLIB!!!

Point to Ponder:  On a piece of loose leaf make a list of everything you know about our 2 Protagonists in Freak the Mighty. Make 2 separate lists. One for Kevin & one for Max.

Day #14 - 9/25/15 -Unit 1 - Literary Element - Style & Tone, Learning Stations, Making Inferences, & Using the Frayer Model

Good Morning Sixth Graders,
          Happy Friday! Today is a very busy day, so please enter the room quietly and get started right away. We will get our pictures taken at 11:20 and participate in the Fun Run at 2:00. We will continue working through Learning Stations today, as well as organizing the plot line of Freak the Mighty. In your Reading Strategies Tab I want you to make a prediction about what will happen in chapter 9, Life is Dangerous. Be sure to include a reason for your prediction. You may use a book to help you. Then work on the Point to Ponder. When you finish you may read quietly.

  • How does Kevin change Max's daily routine? 
  • What is an archetype?
  • Does anyone else feel like Max on page 46 when he is looking up a word in the dictionary?

Day #10 - 9/21/15 - Engaging in Academic Discussions, Literary Element - Plot, & Making Predictions

Good Morning Sixth Graders,
          I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Today is an ‘E’ Day so we will go to Music. Please enter the room quietly with all make sure you have all your materials. Next, place your pennant in a neat pile on the blue table. If you are not done I want you to finish it during homeroom.
          Once you have handed in your college pennant please pick up a copy of Freak the Mighty and engage in an academic discussion with the people at your table about which character you would most like to invite to eat lunch with you. Be sure to support your thinking with evidence from the text.

Be sure you enter the room quietly and make sure you have all your materials. Then, sharpen your pencils and order your lunch. Next, on a piece of lined paper work on the point to ponder. When you are done you may work on a Madlib with a neighbor at your table.
