Standards:
RI6.5 Analyze how a particular sentence, paragraph, chapter, or section fits into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of the ideas.

Directions:
Step 1: Review the 5 different forms of text structure.
Step 2: Review the Definition for Description text structure - The author provides many descriptive details about 1 topic
Step 3: Read the Descriptive article about Labrador Retrievers.
Step 4: Reread the article and underline the details 
Step 5: Write the topic and details in the graphic organizer
Step 6: Color Code, Cut, & Glue in the graphic organizer into your ELA Interactive Notebook

Overview of Text Structure
Standards:
RI6.5 Analyze how a particular sentence, paragraph, chapter, or section fits into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of the ideas.

Direction:
It is important that you can identify the author's purpose for writing a text, but it is just as important that you can identify the way the author structures their text. There are several different structures authors use to write texts. Today we will be learning about the 5 most common structures used in nonfiction writing.

Author's Purpose
Standards:
RI6.6 Determine an author's point of view, or purpose, in a text and explain how it is conveyed in the text

Directions:
Author's have a variety of reasons, or purposes, for writing. As a reader it is your job to determine what that purpose is! It will help you to analyze the writing, and will allow you to make better inferences and conclusions.

Step 1 - Color Code your Graphic organizer so that each category is matched by color (See my example)
Step 2 - Glue in the Graphic Organizers (See pictures below)
Step 3 - Write the definition of each Authors purpose in the graphic organizer
Step 4 - Write the examples

*** We will use these notes tomorrow. We are going to read a variety of passages and practice identifying what the author's purpose was for writing. There will be a quiz on Author's Purpose Monday.

Directions:
Read the article, "How Donald Duck and Peanuts Saved Trick-or-Treating"

*As we read I want you to think about these questions:
1. What is each paragraph about?
2. What Questions do I have?
3. What parts do I not understand?
4. How many sections of information does this article have?
5. What is the Topic, or Main Idea?
6. What evidence makes me think that?


Step 1 - Read the Article
Step 2 - Reread the article. As we read Write inferences, thoughts, and questions you have in the margin.
Step 3 Underline important details

Step 4 - Highlight the topic sentence and the most important supporting detail in each category

Step 5 - Complete the Main Idea & Details Graphic Organizer.
  • How many categories of information are there?
  • What is the most important details/information in each category?
  • Write down the most important detail/information from each category.
  • Write the main idea. (Don't overlook the importance of the title in determining the main idea)
Step 6 - Use the Main Idea & Graphic Organizer to write a summary on lose leaf paper. Remember the directions for how to write a summary on page 31 in your notebook. Include transitional words and phrases to make your writing flow smoothly from one detail to another.

Activity #1

How to Write a Summary for an Informational Article

  • RI6.1 Cite textual evidence to support what the text says as well as inferences made from the text
  • RI6.2 Determine the main idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details. Provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions.

Step 1 - Summaries only contain the most important information, so look at the outline and pick the most important piece of information from each category.
Step 2 - Follow the steps on the graphic organizer to write your summary.
  • Start with the main idea.
  • Write one detail from each category
Step 3 - Use your transitions words and phrases from page 11 in your notebook to add a transitional word, or phrase, in between your details.
