Day #148 - 514/15 - Unit 4 Lesson 9 Part II - Ch 9 Diving into Research & Tracing an Author’s Argument

Good Morning Rebels, 
        Today is a ‘D’ day so we will go to Gym. We will also have a presentation about the different Science classes you will be allowed to take next year.  Please remember to order your lunch, sharpen your pencils, and then work on the Point to Ponder.

P2P: Make a sign telling people how they should treat nature. This could be about animals, trees, global warming, or any other topic that has to do with environmental issues.
Examples:

Independent Reading & Research

Directions for Independent Reading:

  • Reading Logs will be due Friday, May 15th. 
  • Complete your Log after each reading session.
  • This weeks Independent Reading Logs need to be an improvement over last weeks. 
  • Please read the directions carefully and answer the questions on lined paper.
Directions for Research:
Once your Thesis Statement and Research Question has been approved you can begin generating your list of Key Words and Questions. 

Directions for Gathering Info and Tracing an Argument:

Go to: www.roytrumble.blogspot.com

Use your key words and questions to search the following search engines:
  • When you get your search results be sure to look at the name of the website, and the name of the article. Look at the ending of the website to help you. 
.gov = government - these websites are sponsored by the government
.org = organization - these websites are sponsored by various organizations
.edu = education - these websites are sponsored by schools and universities
.com = commercial - these websites are sponsored by individuals or commercial businesses
  • When you find an interesting looking article begin by clicking on it and scanning the information. 
  • Be sure to use the graphic organizer to record the Title of the article, the name of the resource, and important Claims & Information.
  • Decide what the authors claims are.
  • Select what evidence the author uses to support their claim
  • Evaluate if there is enough evidence to support the claim.
  • Evaluate the authors claims to determine their argument. 
  • Evaluate the Quality of the source
* You need multiple sources!!! (at least 3-4 & 1 book if possible)
* You will fill in a “Tracing the author’s argument for each resource.
* You will use the “Tracing Arguments” graphic organizers to help you write your Research Based Persuasive Essay and complete your project.




Homework:
Finish reading Chapter 9 -
 Frightful Finds Sam, Pages 92 - 112
& complete your Lit Circle Job
 Due Friday 5/15/15
