Outline for Unit 4: Research and Persuasive Essay

I. Topic

  • Needs to be about an environmental issue.
  • Can be linked to a future career choice.

Examples: nuclear energy and nuclear engineer, animals in captivity and becoming a vet, pollution, the Great Pacific garbage patch and becoming an environmental engineer.

II. The 2 Sides

  • Every issue has at least two sides
  • You need to ask a General opinion question about your environmental issue? Think - Pros vs cons

Example: Nuclear energy
Should humans be using nuclear energy? What are the pros and cons of using nuclear energy?

What are the two opposing sides to your question?

1. Nuclear energy is a good thing and humans should use it.
     A. If we use nuclear energy what will the impacts(both good and bad) be on the world, and your community?
     B. What can you do in your own community?
2. Nuclear energy is a bad thing and humans should stop using it.
     A. If we stop using nuclear energy what other options do we have to meet our energy needs?
     B. What can you do in your own community?

 III. Thesis
  • Develop a thesis statement saying what you believe to be true about your topic. (This will be highly revised and edited along the way. You will change, shape, and add to your thesis statement as you acquire more information from your research)
Example:
I think nuclear energy is harmful.

To what...?

I think nuclear energy is harmful to the environment.

 So what...?

I think nuclear energy is harmful to the environment so humans should develop alternative energy methods.

Like what...?

I think nuclear energy is harmful to the environment so humans should develop alternative energy methods, such as solar and wind energy.

Why should we use these alternative energy methods
I think nuclear energy is harmful to the environment, so humans should develop alternative energy methods such as solar and wind energy, which are environmentally friendly.

IV. Developing a research question

  • Your question goes with your thesis statement?
Example: What are environmentally  friendly ways for humans to meet their energy needs besides using nuclear energy?
V. Key Words & Questions for Research

Decide on what topics or questions you want or need to cover to support your opinion.

Develop a list of keywords & Key questions to search

Example: key words
Nuclear energy, solar energy, wind energy, alternative energy, nuclear power plants, pros and cons of nuclear energy, for kids

What is nuclear energy?
What is good about nuclear energy? How does nuclear energy help people?
What is bad about nuclear energy? How is nuclear energy harmful to the environment?
What happens when there is an accident at a nuclear power plant?
If I want to have a career as a nuclear engineer what exactly does the job entail?
Where does my energy and electricity in my own house come from? What kind of power plant is in my own community?
