Day 106: 3/6/18 - B day: Comparing & Contrasting a Story & a Movie & Harry Potter Ch. 13

Good day 6th Graders,      
     Today we will continue unit 3, Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Fictional Texts. This week we will be reading chapters 13 - 16.

2. Take out your Mini essay comparing & contrasting the book and the movie

Homework:
  • Read Chapter 13
  • Choose a note taking strategy of your choice bto record important plot events (Must have 8 - 10 notes minimum)

Activity # 1
Comparing & Contrasting 
a Story Presented in Different Formats

Standards:
SL6.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 6 topics
W6.4 Produce clear and coherent writing appropriate to the task, purpose, and audience.
RL6.7 Compare & contrast the experience of reading a story to viewing a video of the text including contrasting what they see and hear when reading the text to what they perceive when they watch

Directions:
We will engage in a whole group discussion about the 2 paragraph mini-essays we wrote about the similarities and differences between the book and the movie.

Key Questions:
  • What are some of the most important similarities between the book and the movie?
  • What are some of the most important differences between the book and the movie?
  • Why do you think that specific event is important?
    • How were the characters similar/different
    • How was the setting similar/different
    • How were the plot events similar/different

Share Frayer Models

Standards:
R6.4 Determine the meaning of words as they are used in a text
SL6.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 6 topics

Directions:
Present your Frayer model to your peers in your House. Be sure to include:
1 - the word
2 - the sentence from the text where you found it
3 - the definition (in your own words)
4 - any synonyms 
5 - any antonyms
6 - an explanation of your illustration
7 - finish by asking if someone in your group can use your word in a sentence

  • What is one new word that you learned today?
  • What is the definition of that word?
  • What does that word mean?
  • Do you think you could use that new word in your every day life?

Read aloud Chapter 13

Standards:
RL6.1 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text 
RL6.2 Determine a theme of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text 
RL6.3 Describe how a particular story's plot unfolds in a series of episodes (Sequence of events) as well as how the characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution

Directions:
Listen to chapter 13 as I read aloud. Record important plot events using a note taking strategy of your own choosing. Focus on events that you think will help you prove that Harry Potter is in fact a literary hero. You must record a minimum of 8 - 10 annotations.

Key Questions
  • What events from this chapter are most important to include in a summary of the chapter? Why?
  • What evidence from the text can you use to prove that Harry is a literary hero?

Goal: To read fictional texts for enjoyment and discuss them with a group of our peers in order to improve our comprehension .
