Day 150: 5/16/17 - D Day: Ch 11 Lit Circle Discussion & Editing & Revising Research

Good day 6th Graders,      
         Today we will get together with our Literature Circle groups to discuss chapters 11. Please make sure you have:
  • Red Folder & Agenda
  • ELA Notebook
  • Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets

Do Now: 
1. Fill out your Agenda with tonight's Homework
2. Put your Lit Circle HW for Ch 11 on your desk 
Homework:
  • Read Chapter 12 of Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets. Complete your Lit Circle Job (Due Thurs 5/18)
  • Make all Final revisions and finish editing your research essay

Ch. 11 Lit Circle Discussions
Standards

SL6.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, & issues building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly

***After today if you do not complete your lit circle job or if you receive a score of 1 on your homework, you will be required to take a quiz on the assigned reading. If you do your homework you will participate in your lit circle discussion as normal.

Rules for Lit Circle Discussions:
The Discussion Director is in charge. They facilitate the conversation.
Sharing goes in this order:
1. The summarizer
2. The Character Captain
3. The Passage Picker
4. The Connector
5. The Vocabulary Enricher
6. The Illustrator
7. The Discussion Director
* Be sure to use the 4 C's of 21st Century Learning
* Each member is expected to contribute to the discussion
* When you share, REMEMBER TO USE QUESTIONS TO ENGAGE THE REST OF YOUR GROUP MEMBERS! When you share it is your job to get the rest of the group involved. The best way to do this is to ask questions, like: what do you think, how did this make you feel, etc. Use open ended questions.

***At the end of your discussion the summarizers will do the 30 Second Recap Challenge.
***There may be a prize for the winner!!!

Key Questions from Mr. T:
1. What is a parselmouth? Would you want to be one? Why?
2. What would be the best part about participating in a dueling club? What would be the worst part?
3. Who would you want to duel? Why?

Your Task: Use the Editing & Revising Checklist and work with a writing partner to improve your writing.

Step 1: Choose partner #1
Step 2: Use the revising checklist to evaluate your writing and make improvements (work with your partner to do this) ***Make sure you have used facts/evidence, and cited your source, at least 8 times. (2 sentences per paragraph)
Step 3: Use the editing checklist to fix spelling, punctuation, grammar errors, Etc. (Work with your partner to do this)
Step 4: Choose a new partner and repeat this process

    • Graphics like: Charts, Graphs, & Diagrams
    • Information - Use the paragraphs from your essay
    • Enlarge them and use backing paper to make them stand out.
    • You might want to create a list of bullets to display your information
