Day 131: 4/11/17 - E Day: Ch 3 Lit. Circle & The Hero's Journey

Good day 6th Graders,      
        Today we will get together with our Literature Circle groups and discuss chapter 3. Please make sure you have:
  • Red Folder & Agenda
  • ELA Notebook
  • Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets

Do Now: 
1. Hand in your Permission Slips for the Movie
2. Fill out your Agenda with tonight's Homework
3. Take out your homework for chapter 3
Homework:
  • Read Chapter 4 of Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets. Complete your Lit Circle Job (Due Thurs 4/13)
  • Answer the short written response questions #1 & 2 for chapter 3 (Due Tomorrow)

Essential Question: 
  • In detail describe how the Weasley brothers manage to help Harry escape from the Dursley's house.
  • Use two adjectives to describe Mrs. Weasley. Support your answers with textual evidence.
  • What is Mr. Weasley's job at the Ministry of Magic? Would you like or dislike having a job like this? Explain. 

      Rules for Lit Circle Discussions:
      The Discussion Director is in charge. They facilitate the conversation.
      Sharing goes in this order:

      5. The Vocabulary Enricher
      6. The Illustrator

      * Be sure to use the 4 C's of 21st Century Learning
      * Each member is expected to contribute to the discussion
      * When you share, REMEMBER TO USE QUESTIONS TO ENGAGE THE REST OF YOUR GROUP MEMBERS! When you share it is your job to get the rest of the group involved. The best way to do this is to ask questions, like: what do you think, how did this make you feel, etc. Use open ended questions.

      The Hero's Journey
      As we read through Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets we will be analyzing the text to evaluate how Harry Potter fits the literary pattern known as the Hero's Journey.

      Essential Question: 
      What is the Hero's journey?
      • A pattern of literature
      • Identified by American Scholar Joseph Campbell
      • Describes the typical adventure of the archetype (character) known as the hero
      • The hero is the person who goes out & achieves great deeds on behalf of a group, or civilization.
