Day 126: 4/4/17 - E Day: Ch 1 Lit. Circle & Short Answer Written Response, The Hero's Journey, & Ch 2 Read-Aloud

Good day 6th Graders,      
        Today we will get together with our Literature Circle groups and discuss chapter 1. Please make sure you have:
  • Red Folder & Agenda
  • ELA Notebook
  • Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets

1. Sharpen Your Pencils
2. Fill out your Agenda with tonight's Homework
3. Take out your homework for chapter 1
Homework:
  • Read Ch. 2 of HP & the COS. Complete your Lit Circle Job
  • Answer the Quick Comprehension Questions #1 & 2 for Chapter 1

Essential Question: 
  1. Why is Harry feeling extremely gloomy in this chapter? Name at least 3 reasons.
  2. What is Mr. Dursley's plan for dinner. Include each family member's role in the plans, including Harry's role.

The Hero's Journey
As we read through Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets we will be analyzing the text to evaluate how Harry Potter fits the literary pattern known as the Hero's Journey.

Essential Question: 
What is the Hero's journey?
  • A pattern of literature
  • Identified by American Scholar Joseph Campbell
  • Describes the typical adventure of the archetype (character) known as the hero
  • The hero is the person who goes out & achieves great deeds on behalf of a group, or civilization.

Essential Question: 
  • Can you summarize Dobby's warning to Harry? What clues does he give Harry?
  • What does the letter say that Harry receives from the Ministry of Magic? How does the letter affect the way the Dursleys treat Harry? 
    Homework:
    • Read Chapter 2 of Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets. Complete your Lit Circle Job (Due Thur 4/6)
