Day 84: 1/20/17 - C day: Paraphrasing Stanzas 3 & 4 of 'If' by Rudyard Kipling

Good day 6th Graders,      
         Welcome ladies and gentlemen. This week we will be continue unit 2 about Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Informational Texts by paraphrasing the poem, "IF" by Rudyard Kipling . Please make sure you have:

  • ELA Notebook

Do Now: 
1. Make sure you have all your materials
2. Sharpen pencils
3. Turn and Talk with an elbow partner about the independent reading book you brought to class

Activity #1
IF - By Rudyard Kipling
  • RI6.4 - Determine the meaning of unknown words and phrases aa they are used in a text, including figurative language, connotative and technical meaning.
  • RI6.5 - Analyze how a particular sentence, paragraph, chapter, stanza, or section fits into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of ideas.







Directions
Part 1: 10 - 15 minutes (You do)

  • In small groups share what you noticed and what you wondered about in Stanza 3 & 4. Take time to discuss what you wondered.
  • Then share the rules that you paraphrased in Stanza 3 & 4. There are a total of 3 rules to live by in stanza 3, and 5 rules in stanza 4.
  • You should analyze, evaluate, and reflect on what you wrote. You may change your responses, add to your responses, and edit what you wrote. Be prepared to share with the whole group. 


Part 2: Whole group: (We do) 

What did you Notices and Wonder about Stanza 3 & 4?

Essential Questions

  • What do you notice about the structure(the way it’s organized) of stanza 1?
  • What do you wonder about the structure?
  • What do you notice about the punctuation?
  • What do you wonder about the punctuation?
  • What do you notice about the word choice?
  • What do you wonder about the word choice?
  • Are there any words or phrases that stand out to you? Why?
**WHAT RULES WERE YOU ABLE TO PARAPHRASE?

Homework:
  • Read for 20 - 30 minutes every day over the weekend.
    RTI - C Day 1/20/17
    Step 1 - Pick up an article. We will be choosing an article to do together as a whole group.
    Step 2 - Read through your article to get a basic understanding of what the article is about.
    Step 3 - Reread the article a 2nd time and use the Highlighting and annotating Strategy.

    Step 4 - Complete the Main Idea Graphic Organizer
    ***When you are done you will bring your work to me and we will conference about your article. I will be asking:
    1. What is the topic of your article?
    2. What is the topic sentence?
    3. What is the Main Idea?
    4. What supporting details led you to think that?
    Step 5 - Write a summary
