Day 80: 1/13/17 - D day: Text Structure Assessment & Stanza 4 of 'If'

Good day 6th Graders,      
         Welcome ladies and gentlemen. This week we will be continue unit 2 about Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Informational Texts by assessing your knowledge on the various text structures. Please make sure you have:

P2P: Review your MLK Fact Finding Mission and be prepared to hand it in.


Activity #1
Hand in your MLK Fact Finding Mission Packets

Key Questions:
  • What was the most interesting thing you learned about MLK Jr?
  • How do you think life would be different if MLK was never born?
  • How can you apply what you learned about MLK to your own life?
Activity #2
Text Structure: Assessment
  • RI6.5 - Analyze how a particular sentence, paragraph, or chapter fit into the overall structure of a text and how it contributes to the development of ideas. 
Directions: Read each passage and answer the 4 questions that go with each.
 



Activity #3
Paraphrasing Stanza 4 of "If"
  • RI6.4 - Determine the meaning of unknown words and phrases aa they are used in a text, including figurative language, connotative and technical meaning.
  • RI6.5 - Analyze how a particular sentence, paragraph, chapter, stanza, or section fits into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of ideas.
SO FAR....Kipling has given the reader the "If" part of an 'If, then' Statement. Everything he has said is about the things he wants his son to be able to do. In stanza 4 he finishes the poem by telling his son what his reward will be, (or the 'then' part) if he can do all the things listed in the first 3 stanzas.
What were the rules in the first 3 stanzas?


  • What rules does Kipling give you in stanza 4?
  • Work in a small group to paraphrase each line. 
  • What will be the son's reward for doing all these things?


Homework:
  • Enjoy your weekend and read a good book for at least 20 minutes each day.
    RTI - D Day 1/13/17
    Step 1 - Pick up an article. We will be choosing an article to do together as a whole group.
    Step 2 - Read through your article to get a basic understanding of what the article is about.
    Step 3 - Reread the article a 2nd time and use the Highlighting Strategy to identify the:
    • Topic
    • Topic Sentence
    • Supporting Details
    • Main Idea

    Step 4 - Complete the Main Idea Graphic Organizer
    ***When you are done you will bring your work to me and we will conference about your article. I will be asking:
    1. What is the topic of your article?
    2. What is the topic sentence?
    3. What is the Main Idea?
    4. What supporting details led you to think that?

    Enrichment Group:
    Select an aspect of the Great depression to research. 
    Some examples include:
