Day #108 - 3/8/16 - Unit 3: Bud, Not Buddy & If, by Rudyard Kipling - Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Informational Texts & Poetry

Good Morning Sixth Graders,
          Happy Tuesday. Today is a C day so we will go to Gym. We will also be working in Stations. Please order your lunch, sharpen your pencils, and make sure you have all materials. Then hand in your homework from chapter 14 and work on the point to ponder. Lastly, I need 3 volunteers this morning to run some errands.

#1 Guided Reading (We do)
First
  • Today we will paraphrase stanza 2 of If by Rudyard Kipling...
  • so we can understand unknown words and phrases, and determine what the author is trying to tell the reader.
  • I'll know I've got it when I ________________ .
Second
  • Authors Purpose
    • Why do author write informational articles?
    • There are 5 different reasons!
    • Can you name them all?
#2 Independent Reading (You do)
  • Today I will read poetry of my choosing 
  • so I can sample a wide variety of poems to begin thinking about the kind of poetry I would like to write. 


 #3 Word Work/Writing (You do)
Building Vocabulary
  • Create a Frayer Model for a vocab. word from chapters 12 - 14
  • Be sure to include the sentence from the text & an illustration

#4 Social Studies (You do)
  • Go to Mr. T's Social Studies and work on the Time Travel Brochure.
  • Even if you do not have all your information yet, you can begin planning out your brochure. 
  • You may work folding your brochure paper, designing the cover, and inserting things like titles for each section.
  • You may work on drafting your paragraphs for Dynasties and Daily Life.
  • Use Pencil first to lay out your brochure.
  • ****See the Social Studies Blog for specific directions.

#5 Computers (You do)
Research or Typing

*Go to Mr. T's Social Studies and follow the directions to finish your research or to write paragraphs for your Time Travel Brochure.
*Make sure you communicate with your partner about what you're working on and inform them of your progress.

Homework:
1. Read Informational Article, Complete Quiz, and Author's Purpose graphic organizer
2. Finish Author's Purpose activity
3. Print pictures for your Brochure
