Day #106 - 3/4/16 -Unit 3: Bud, Not Buddy & If, by Rudyard Kipling - Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Informational Texts & Poetry

Good Morning Sixth Graders,
          Happy Friday. I hope you all were able to read chapter 13 and write your summary. I will be around to check them. Today is an A day so we will go to Gym. We will also be working in Stations so please review the station expectations, then work on the point to ponder. Please order your lunch, sharpen your pencils, and make sure you have all materials.

1. In your Reading Response Section: How does the author develop the theme of "family" throughout the novel. Provide an example.

#1 Guided Reading (We do)

  • Today we will paraphrase stanza 1 of If by Rudyard Kipling...
  • so we can understand unknown words, phrases, and figurative language, in order to determine what the author is trying to tell the reader.

  • Today I will read poetry of my own choosing 
  • so I can sample a variety poems to begin thinking about the kind of poetry I would like to write. 


 #3 Word Work/Writing (You do)
Building Vocabulary
  • Create a Frayer Model for a vocab. word from chapters 11 - 13
  • Be sure to include the sentence from the text & an illustration

#4 Social Studies (You do)
  • Put all finishing touches on your ancient Egyptian Timeline.
  • ***If you are finished with the timeline, use your notes and textbook to begin recording information for your research project.
Directions:
Step 1: Read the events that you will be using on your timeline, cut them out & match the pictures that go with the events.
Step 2: Place them in chronological order and Number the events, along with their pictures.

Step 3: Get 4 sheets of paper (same color) ***See Teacher example****
Step 4: Glue them or staple them together end to end, overlapping them about 1 inch. Be sure that your 4 sheets measure at least 1 meter, (100cm)
Step 5: Use a ruler to draw a straight line across your paper.
Step 6: Create a Scale. You need to have the years 5000BC - 0 on your timeline. I used 10cm = 500years. (see my example)
Step 7: Mark the scale and write it on your timeline in pencil.

Step 8: Go over your pencil lines on your number line with marker.
Step 9: Cut out your events and pictures
Step 110: Match your pictures with the proper event.

Step 11: Glue your events to your timeline being sure to draw your picture and event are aligned, connected somehow. 
Step 12: Title your Timeline

1. Read the informational article. 
2. Complete the quiz and Main Idea/Supporting Details graphic Organizer
