Day #60 - 12/5/14 - Unit 2: Lesson 11 Part I

Good Morning 6th Graders,
    It is an ‘A’ day so we will go to Music.  If you watched Jeopardy last night and completed the homework assignment please hand it in right away this morning. Be sure your name is on it and place it on my desk. Last, work on the Point to Ponder.

P2P: Christmas is now less than 3 weeks away. Christmas should be a time of giving and helping others. What are some things you can do to help others? What is something you can give someone this holiday season that doesn’t cost any money?

Activity #1
Directions: Use the model and your graphic organizers to finish drafting your analytical essay. 




















When you finish Drafting:
  • reread what you have written
  • Be sure that you have used proper capitals and punctuation
  • Compare your essay to the model essay. If you feel like your essay is done, you are now ready for the next step.

Activity #2
Critiquing an Analytical Essay
Use Lesson 11 pg 8
Directions: Work with a partner to critique your essays. Take your time and work slowly. It is your job to help each other become stronger writers. 

When you are done having your work critiqued you are ready to make your revisions and write your final draft. Be sure you have your work checked by a teacher before you begin writing your final copy.

  • Tangerine - Is Paul a Hero?
    • Write a reflection showing how Paul is on the Hero’s journey. 
    • Use 2 - 3 details from the story to support your thinking.
Example: 
Paul is an example of a classic hero who has just been on the Hero’ Journey. Paul goes through the first act, stage _____ the call to action when his school experiences a sinkhole and he becomes part of the rescue brigade pulling students out of the disaster area. Later in act 1, stage ______ , Paul enters the unknown when he is forced to switch schools from Lake Windsor Downs to Tangerine Middle. He goes from the world of his rich suburban neighborhood to the rough tough city. While at his new school and while with his new friends, Paul overcomes many obstacles on his road of trials. He plays in numerous soccer games and remains undefeated, and he fights the freeze in the grove and helps save the Golden Dawn Tangerines. Paul faces his supreme ordeal when he plays in the championship game and wins the league title. In addition, Paul confronts his father about his mysterious eye injury and ultimately becomes the master of two worlds after he jumps on Coach Warners back. Paul ends up being famous for this action. Paul goes from a boy who is living in fear to a hero who learns how to be courageous and stand up to his brother.

Paragraph 1
1. Tell me the title and author 
2. Write the Gist
3. Write a brief summary

4. Describe the main character (What type of person is the main character?)
5. Make an Inference about the main character. Use evidence from the text to support your inference. 

Paragraph 3
6. Write a prediction about what you think might happen in the rest of the book.
7. Finish with a question or something that you wonder.
