Day 97: 2/13/20 - A Day: Summary Challenge, Best Question & Harry Potter Ch. 12

Good day 6th Graders,      
       Today we will continue unit 3, Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Fictional Texts by reading Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets. Today we will be doing the 45 Second Summary Challenge, Best Question, and we will begin reading chapter 12.

Do Now: 
1. Find your Hogwarts House Table and have a seat
2. Write your homework down in your agenda
3. Take out your homework from chapter 11
Homework:
  • Finish Reading Ch 12
  • Complete a note taking strategy of your choice

Activity #1
Summarizing Plot 
&
 The 45 second Summary Challenge

Standards
SL6.1 - Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners.

W6.4 - Produce clear & coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Directions for House Discussions:
1. Collaborate & work with the members of your house to discuss the events of Chapter 11. Talk about the plot, and what you think is most important details.
2. Share your questions with each other. During this time no one should worry about writing.
3. You will have the first 8- 10 minutes for your discussion. I will check your homework during this time. When I am done I will let you know when you should begin writing your summaries.
4. Your summaries should include:
  • the main idea or topic sentence (think 'mood')
  • the most important details from the chapter
  • your reflection (Opinion or thoughts)
5. You will then choose 1 person from your house to read their summary out loud. The winning house will receive 25 points for their house!

Which House was able to write the best question on their Cornell Notes from last night?

But First...let's review.

1. Who steals the ingredients to make the Polyjuice Potion? Why?
2. What kind of club does Lockhart start?
3. What do we learn about Harry at the clubs first meeting?
4. What do all the students at Hogwarts now think about Harry?
5. Who does Harry find Petrified in this chapter?

***What level are all of these question?***


The house with the best question will earn 25 points.
  • Remember:
    • Level 1 - Has 1 answer & the answer comes right out of the book
    • Level 2 - Has multiple answers and puts you, the reader, into the book.
    • Level 3 - Has multiple answers and pulls a situation/event from the book and asks you to apply it to your life

A Note taking strategy of your choice

RL6.1 - Cite Textual Evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text

RL6.3 - Describe how a particular story's plot unfolds in a series of events as well as how the characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution

Directions:
  • As I read aloud Chapter 12 you will complete a note taking strategy of your choice
