Day #10 - 9/16/14 - Unit 1 Lesson 6

Good Morning 6th Graders,
          Today is an ‘E’ Day. Please remember to get yourself ready for the day. It is your responsibility to use homeroom time to prepare for Block 1.  We will not continue to remind you about ordering your lunch and sharpening your pencils every day. Mrs. Sargent and I will be expecting you to remember to do those things on your own.

Please finish your response to last night’s homework on Lesson 5 page 11. Be sure that you have used evidence flags to cite your evidence.

  • I can determine the meaning of words using prefixes and context clues.
  • I can cite evidence from the text when answering questions and discussing Percy’s character. 

Opening: (5 minutes)
Directions:
Have a discussion with your Triad group about the challenges Percy Faced in chapter 3 and how he responded to those challenges. Use your evidence flags from chapters 3 to drive the discussion.


Vocabulary Work Time:

Look at the title of Chapter 3: 
"Grover Unexpectedly Loses His Pants”

What do you notice about the word ‘unexpectedly?’


Can you think of other words that begin with the prefix “un-“




What do you think the prefix “un-“ means?




Directions for Triad Group Work time

  • Preview the Prefix list in Lesson 6 page 8. 
  • Complete Lesson 6 page 9 & 10 ‘Determining the Meaning of Unfamiliar Words’
  • Use your knowledge of prefixes, your prefix list and context clues to help you determine the meaning of the bolded word in each sentence.



Things Close Readers Do:
  • Get the gist of what a text is mostly about
  • Cite evidence
  • Use context clues to figure out word meanings
  • Pay Attention to vocabulary
  • Use Prefixes to determine word meanings



Homework:
  • Lesson 6 Page 11 
  • Reread your favorite part in chapter 1 - 4. Use your evidence flags to tag words with prefixes.
