Day 78: 1/14/20 - B Day: STAR & Outlining Persuasive Essays

Good day 6th Graders,      
       As we wrap up unit 2 about Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Informational Texts Today we will be using the computers to do our January STAR assessment and then we will continue working  on our persuasive speeches.

Do Now: 
1. Fill out your Agenda with tonight's Homework
2. Hand in your Signed Grade Report
Homework:
  • Finish your outline - We will begin drafting tomorrow. There are no excuses for not having your outline done
Activity #1
STAR Assessment
It is once again time to evaluate our reading comprehension. Make sure you:
1. Take your time
2. Read each question Carefully
3. Use Process of elimination

Activity #2
Outlining a Persuasive Essay

Steps you should be working through:
1. Finish Finding your two articles
2. Read & annotate your articles
3. Complete the Gathering Info Graphic Organizers
4. Write your Thesis Statement - in your notebook
5. Complete the Outline
  • Start with the Thesis
  • Then put in your 3 reasons
  • Go through the outline from beginning to end
  • You may skip parts and come back to them later
  • Be sure to include your sources when writing evidence
  • Use your Checklist if you are unsure about what to do on a specific part
  • Be sure to ask for help if you are stuck
  • You do not need to write in complete sentences - You will write paragraphs with well structured sentences when you draft

RI6.8 - Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, distinguishing claims that are supported by reasons and evidence from claims that are not.

W6.1 - Write arguments to support claims with clear and relevant evidence.
a. Introduce a claim & organize the reasons and evidence clearly.
b. Support your claim using credible sources and demonstrate understanding of the topic.
c. Use words, phrases, and clauses to clarify the relationships among claims and reasons.
d. establish and maintain a formal style.
e. Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from the argument presented.

Use the Writing a Persuasive Essay Checklist along with the Outline to begin planning your essay. REMEMBER, THE OUTLINE IS JUST THAT, AN OUTLINE. IT IS NOT THE PAPER ITSELF. YOU WILL BE USING YOR OUTLINE TO THEN WRITE WELL STRUCTURED PARAGRAPHS.
