Day 4: 9/9/19 - D Day: Setting Up Interactive Notebooks, & Freak the Mighty Ch 1

Good Morning 6th Graders,
          Today is a 'D' Day. Please use the bathroom & sharpen your pencils. Make sure you have everything you need for your morning classes, and hand in any important forms that you have. This week we will begin our first novel, Freak the Mighty.

1. Write your homework in your agenda
2. Hand in "Who are You?" in the red bin
3. Give me your Photo Release authorization form
4. Pick up a copy of Freak the Mighty

Homework: 
  • Finish reading Ch 1
  • Complete the Reading Guide for Ch 1

Reading Strategy - Annotating a Text
While you read it is important to annotate what you are reading. This will allow you to comprehend what you are reading and make more accurate inferences about the reading.
  • Use the back of your reading guide to record important information or questions you have while reading. Notes could be about:
As you take notes begin to think about the:
  1. Characters
  2. Setting
  3. Plot
  4. Themes
  5. Conflicts
  6. etc.

Key Questions:
  • Who is the main character?
  • What inferences can you make about him?
  • How do you know? (What is your evidence?)
  • What was Max's nickname in daycare? Why?
  • How does Max feel about his grandparents? How do you know?
  • Who is Freak?
  • Analyze the language Max uses to describe himself. What does this tell you about the way he views himself?
