Day 54: 11/29/18 - B Day: Overview of Text Structure & Ch 11 Comparing Characters

Good day 6th Graders,      
         Today we will be continue unit 2 about Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Informational Texts. Please make sure you have all your materials.

Activity #1
Overview of Text Structure
Standards:
RI6.5 Analyze how a particular sentence, paragraph, chapter, or section fits into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of the ideas.

Direction:
It is important that you can identify the author's purpose for writing a text, but it is just as important that you can identify the way the author structures their text. There are several different structures authors use to write texts. Today we will be learning about the 5 most common structures used in nonfiction writing. 




Activity #2
Read-a-loud Ch. 11 - Comparing Characters
Standards:
RL6.2 'Provide a summary of a text distinct from personal opinions'
RL6.3 'Describe how characters respond and change as the plot moves forward'

Part 1
Essential Question for chapter 10:
What important events did you include in a summary of chapter 10?

Use - Mix & Mingle 5 minutes

Part 2
Essential Questions for Chapter 11:
How are these characters alike?
How are these characters different?

Directions:
As we read think about the three different families Bud has encountered. Record information in the graphic organizer to describe each family. Then write a paragraph about how they are alike and how they are different. Use the back of the worksheet or lined paper to draft your response.

Select an aspect of the Great depression to research. 
Some examples include:

Create a visual presentation regarding the information you learned.

  • Brochure
  • Skit
  • etc.
You will be expected to present your information and teach the rest of the 6th graders about what you learned. I will be recording your presentations and they will be posted to our youtube channel.

Step 1: Decide if you want to work independently, with a partner, or in a small group
Step 2: Select a topic
Step 3: Decide on what type of presentation you want to do for the class.
****At this point you need to report to Mr. Trumble to give him your:

Step 4: Do your research. Use the internet to research your topic.
Step 5: Organize your information. Identify the Main Idea, or Message, you want to teach your classmates about your topic.
Step 6: Chose what details you will use to help teach the other students about your topic.
