Day 67: 12/19/16 - A Day: Practice Analyzing Author's Purpose & Character Analysis in ch 11 & 12

Good day 6th Graders,      
         Today we will be Continue unit 2 about Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Informational Texts. Please make sure you have:

Activity #1
Author's Purpose
Author's have a variety of reasons, or purposes, for writing a text. As a reader it is your job to determine what that purpose is!

Your Task:
First: Independently read each passage and determine what the author's purpose is for writing each passage. Circle your answer. Use your notes to help you! You will hand in your responses and I will take your score as a quiz grade. 

Then, in groups of 3, reread each passage and discuss each with your group members. Determine what the author's purpose is for writing each passage. Circle your answer. Be sure to discuss the reasons for your answers. Use your notes to help you! We will go over the correct answers as a whole group.



Activity #2
Read-Aloud Chapter 12
  • RL6.1 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text
Directions:
Add at least 3 new words to your word catcher.
Essential Questions:
  • What were Bud's actions when Lefty took Bud to meet his Dad?
  • What would your actions be?


Homework:
  • Read Chapter 12
  • Add 3 new words to your Word Catcher
  • Complete the Course of Action Graphic organizer
RTI - A Day 12/19/16

Step 1 - Pick up an article. We will be choosing an article to do together as a whole group.
Step 2 - Read through your article to get a basic understanding of what the article is about.
Step 3 - Reread the article a 2nd time and use the Highlighting Strategy to identify the:
  • Topic
  • Topic Sentence
  • Supporting Details
  • Main Idea

Step 4 - Complete the Main Idea Graphic Organizer
***When you are done you will bring your work to me and we will conference about your article. I will be asking:
1. What is the topic of your article?
2. What is the topic sentence?
3. What is the Main Idea?
4. What supporting details led you to think that?

Enrichment Group:
Select an aspect of the Great depression to research.
