Day 60: 12/8/16 - E day: Analyzing Events in Ch 8 & Summarizing an Article with 4 Sub-Categories

Good day 6th Graders,      
         Today we will be Continue unit 2 about Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Informational Texts. Please make sure you have:
  • Red Folder & Agenda
  • ELA Notebook
  • Bud, Not Buddy
  • Colored Highlighters

P2P: Cut out your graphic organizer from yesterday and glue it into your notebook. See mine for an example.


Activity #1
Review the Chronology of Events from Ch 8
  • RL6.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details. Provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions
Essential Question:
What words did you add to your word catcher?

What events did you put on your timeline?
  • Work in a group of 3 to discuss your timeline of events.
  • You may add, change, or edit your responses.


Activity #2
Identifying Main Idea & Supporting Details in order to Write a Summary for an Informational Article with Multiple Ideas
  • RI6.1 Cite textual evidence to support what the text says as well as inferences made from the text
  • RI6.2 Determine the main idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details. Provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions.
Your task: Read the article about Healthy Eating. Complete the graphic organizer. Then Write a summary about the main Idea, and the most important information.
30 - 35 min (You do)

Now that you have the graphic organizer filled out, you are ready to select the most important information to include in a summary of the article.

Evaluate Cause & Effect Relationships
  • RL6.1 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text
Directions:
  • Read Chapter 9 
  • Record 3 new words on your word catcher.
  • Complete the Cause & Effect Graphic Organizer for Ch 9
Homework: (Due Friday 12/9)
  • Finish Reading Chapter 9.
  • Complete the Cause & Effect Graphic Organizer 
  • Record at least 3 words from chapter 9 on your word catcher.
    RTI - E Day 12/8/16

    Step 1 - Pick up an article
    Step 2 - Read through your article to get a basic understanding of what the article is about.
    Step 3 - Reread the article a 2nd time and use the Highlighting Strategy to identify the:
    • Topic
    • Topic Sentence
    • Supporting Details
    • Main Idea
    Step 4 - Complete the Main Idea Graphic Organizer
    Step 5 - Complete the Quiz

    ***When you are done you will bring your work to me and we will conference about your article. I will be asking:
    1. What is the topic of your article?
    2. What is the topic sentence?
    3. What is the Main Idea?
    4. What supporting details led you to think that?

    Enrichment Group:
    Select an aspect of the Great depression to research.
