Day #25 - 10/14/15 - Unit 1: Writing (word Choice) & Read Aloud Ch 16 - Analyzing how authors use Point of View to shape their stories and how it affects the Reader

Good Morning Sixth Graders,
          I hope you all are having a wonderful morning. Please make sure you have all your materials for ELA and Social Studies. Sharpen your pencils and order your lunch. 
         Please be aware that you all now have your own classroom mailbox. They are located next to the classroom library. Your mailbox number is the same as it is for Mr. Frost. Please be sure to check your mailbox daily.
        We will continue to work with Mrs. Isham on narrative writing today. We will also take notes on 'Point of View' and read the next chapter of Freak the Mighty.

Reading Notes Section
  • Point of View: The perspective of the person telling the story
  • Answers the Question: Who is telling the story? Who is the narrator? 
  • There are four different Points of View

First Person - Told from the viewpoint of one of the characters using the pronouns "I" and "we"

Third Person: Limited - The narrator is an outside observer that focuses on the thoughts and feelings of only one Character
  
Third Person: Omniscient - The narrator is an outside observer who can tell us the thoughts & feelings 
   
Third Person: Objective - The narrator reports the facts as a neutral and impersonal outside observer

Read Aloud - Chapter 16
  1. Who is the Narrator?
  2. What Point of View is the author using to tell the story?
  3. How does this shape the readers understanding of the story?
  4. Pg 101 - What is your opinion of Max's father's words?"I know what they told ya. It's all a big lie, you understand. I never killed anybody, and that's the truth, so help me god."Do you believe Max's father? 
  5. Pg 103 - How does the narrators word choice and description of Christmas Eve on page 103 affect the mood and tone?
  6. Pgs 104 - 106 How does the point of view influence the readers experiences as Max describes his Christmas Eve with his father? What kind of picture does the narrator create? Can you describe the people in this scene? How does the narrator describe them? How does this affect you as the reader?
  7.  Pg 107 - How would you react to the events of the evening?
***Add an event from chapter 16 to you plot line***
