Day #24 - 10/13/15 - Learning Stations - Drafting a Mini Literary Essay

Good Morning Sixth Graders,
    Today is a ‘D’ Day so we will go to Library. Please enter the room quietly and make sure you have all your materials for ELA and Social Studies. Then order your lunch and sharpen your pencils. 
          It is Trivia Tuesday so please pick up a trivia card from the music stand and take turns asking and answering questions with the people at your table. Please speak in a quiet voice

Activity #1

#1 Guided Reading
  • Double Dose Day: Today is your last day for reading your independent reading books in school. On the next learning stations day we will all begin our guided reading books. When you are at the guided reading station today you will be reading from your independent reading book.
    #2 Independent Reading
    • Annotate: Questions & Making Connections
      • See Reading Response Notebook For Questions
      • Making Connections - Text to Text, Text to World, Text to Self
      • Be prepared to share your connections and/or questions at the end of stations today
    #3 Word Work
    • Use your independent reading book and a dictionary to complete the Frayer model for 5 of your vocabulary words.
    #4 Work on Writing

    Pick a Prompt: 
    1. Think about the themes of friendship, acceptance & trust. How does the author develop these themes throughout the story? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.
    2. Think about the types of conflict in Freak the Mighty: Man vs. self, and man vs. man? How does the author develop each of these conflicts throughout the story? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.
    Outline for Writing:

    Paragraph 1 - Intro


    Paragraph 2 - Example #1 & Supporting Evidence

                                (Use details and text from the novel)
    Paragraph 3 - Example #2 & Supporting Evidence
                               (Use details and text from the novel)
    Paragraph 4 - Conclusion: Reflect & Draw to a close 

    #5 Computer
    • Log on to the computer
    • Open up your Freak the Mighty Mini Essay
    • Finish Drafting
    • Make sure you have include a proper heading
    • Edit your writing: Make sure you have used proper capitals and punctuation. Check for run-on sentences.
    • Use the Checklist to revise your writing

    Reading Log: Due Friday October 16th
