Day #8 - 9/17/15 - Unit 1: Writing Evidence Based Responses to text, Literary Elements - Conflict

Good Morning Sixth Graders,
Today is a ‘C’ Day so we will go to Gym. Be sure you enter the room quietly and check the whiteboard to make sure you have all your materials, including lined paper. I DO NOT WANT YOU GOING BACK TO YOUR LOCKER AFTER ANNOUNCEMENTS!
Then, sharpen your pencils and order your lunch. See me for a piece of tape so you can hang your coat of arms above your locker. Next, work on the point to ponder. When you are done you may read quietly at your seat.
                                    Thank you
                                     Mr. Trumble
Point to Ponder: Complete the 3 Minute Test

  • Conflict = involves a struggle between two opposing forces usually a protagonist and an antagonist.
  • Protagonist - the leading character or one of the major characters in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional text
  • Antagonist - a person who is opposed to, struggles against, or competes with another; opponent; adversary.
  • Conflicts can be:
  • Internal: Man vs. Self
  • External: Man vs. Man & Man vs. Nature
Questions to ask yourself while reading:
(pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading)
  • What people or forces oppose each other?
  • What decisions must the characters make? (Between what 2 things is the main character deciding?)
  • What do these things represent?
Activity #3
Read -Aloud Chapter 6

How do we respond to literature using evidence from the text?
  • What is the conflict for our 2 main characters?
  • What kind of conflict is it?
    • Man vs self, man vs man, or man vs nature?

Modeled Written response:
Prompt: What is the conflict for Max and Kevin? How do you know?
= Direct details from the text but in my own words
= Exact details, words or quotes from the text

In chapter 6 of Freak the Mighty, Max and Kevin encounter a conflict with another character. The two of them go to see fireworks at the local pond and run into Tony D,  who is also known as Blade. Blade stops Max and Kevin and asks them to give him an M80. Blade also calls them mean names like, "Andre the Giant" and "Dwarf." In return, Kevin tells Max to ignore the Cretin. Just when Max thought Blade was going to kill him the cops showed up to end the conflict before it could get to that point.
After the whole encounter when Kevin asks Max if he could win the fight with Tony, Max replies, "Are you kidding? You can't just fight Blade, you have to fight his gang, too!" This conflict is an example of a man vs. man conflict. Kevin and Max are the Protagonists and Blade is the antagonist. The characters have to decide whether or not to stand up to Blade or to back down.
