Day #10 - 9/21/15 - Engaging in Academic Discussions, Literary Element - Plot, & Making Predictions

Good Morning Sixth Graders,
          I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Today is an ‘E’ Day so we will go to Music. Please enter the room quietly with all make sure you have all your materials. Next, place your pennant in a neat pile on the blue table. If you are not done I want you to finish it during homeroom.
          Once you have handed in your college pennant please pick up a copy of Freak the Mighty and engage in an academic discussion with the people at your table about which character you would most like to invite to eat lunch with you. Be sure to support your thinking with evidence from the text.

Plot - The Main events, or story sequence, in a literary work, movie, or play

Plot is made up of 6 distinct elements:

With your group member please create a poster for the plot element on your slip of paper.

  • Then as a whole group we will work together to put the elements in the proper order.
  • Choose a spokesperson for your group to share with the rest of the class.

Reading Strategy: Making Predictions
In chapter 6 Max and Kevin encounter their first big conflict when the have a run in with Tony D, alias Blade. Chapter 7 is titled "Walking High Above the World?
Make a prediction about what might happen in chapter 7. (Turn and Talk)

Academic Discussion Questions:
  • At this point in their friendship who is the brains?
  • How do the events on pages 36 & 37 add to the theme of trust?
  • What character trait is Freak showing on page 39 when he refuses to let go of Max? 
  • What does this action tell you about their friendship?
  • Who gave Kevin and Max the name "Freak the Mighty"?

4. Click on the ‘Select a name’ tab and scroll down to find your name. The names are alphabetical by first name.

5. Type in your password: last name (all lower case)

6. Click on Create New Post or leave a comment for an existing post.

7. *****Be sure you title each of your posts*****

8. Insert your text into the body of the blog entry
9. When you are finished writing your entry click on Publish

Publish entries to Classmates only!!!

Homework:
Begin working on this week's Independent Reading Log.
Due Friday 9/25
Access Kidblog and write a response to the  Literary Elements: Setting and Characterization post.
