The Hero's Journey

The Hero’s Journey is a pattern of narrative identified by the American scholar Joseph Campbell that appears in novels, dramas, myths, movies, and storytelling.  It describes the typical adventure of the archetype known as The Hero, the person who goes out and achieves great deeds on behalf of the group, tribe, or civilization.

Directions:
Part 1
  • Each group will be given a slip of paper containing the definition of one stage of the Hero's Journey
  • Use a piece of white printer paper to make a mini poster for your stage of the Hero's Journey.
  • Write the Stage name in Large Print on the Top Half of your paper. 
  • Write the Definition in large print on the bottom half.

Part 2
Arrange yourselves in chronological order according to the "Hero's Journey"
Rules:
  • You may move 1 person or switch 2 people, explaining why you think the switch is necessary. 
  • We will continue to adjust the arrangement until we all agree we are in the right order.

of 
Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets

Key Questions:

  • Does Harry fit in with the Dursley's? How do you know?
  • What kind of people are the Dursley's? How do you know?
  • What is Dobby's warning?
  • What should Harry do about his warning?
  • How does Harry feels out of place? Explain using evidence from the text.
  • What point of view is the author using?

Homework: Read 20 minutes. Complete Reading Log for Day 2: Questioning
