Activity #1
Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets Chapter 3 - The Burrow

Directions:
  • As we read today we will complete a Venn diagram for chapter 3
  • You have a Venn Diagram in your ELA Packet
  • Cut it out & Glue it into your notebook (sideways)
  • Give your notebook a page number, a title, and the date
  • *Remember* Notes go on the left side of your notebook.
We will be comparing two different settings/families.
1. The Dursley's
2. The Weasley's

Discussion Questions:

  • How do Harry & the Weasley's get to the Burrow?
  • Do you think Harry made the right decision to go with Ron & his brothers?
  • Would you have gone with them?Explain.
  • Describe Fred & George's plan to trick Mrs. Weasley?
  • How does Mrs. Weasley react to her sons taking the car?
  • How would your parents react if you did something like that?
  • What punishment does Mrs. Weasley give to her sons
  • How does Harry feel about the Burrow?
Questions to think about for your Venn Diagram
  • What is similar about the two settings/families?
  • What is different about the two settings/families?
  • What is life like at the Weasley's/Dursleys?
  • How does Harry's feel about life at the Weasley's/Dursleys?
  • How does each of the families treat Harry?

Best Question:
(If time permits)

Level 1 - Has 1 answer that can be found directly in the text *Does not prompt a discussion because there is only 1 correct answer & it's right in the book

Level 2 - Has an infinite number of answers and puts you, the reader, into the book. *Usually prompts the best discussions if everyone does their reading, because this type of question asks for your opinion about things that are happening in the book, and everyone has an opinion.

Level 3 - Has an infinite number of answers and pulls situations from the book and asks you to apply them to your own life. *Can often prompt great discussions if you ask the right question because these types of questions get people talking about their own lives.

When we play "Best Question" your classroom teacher acts as the judge. Each house picks 1 representative to read the question they think is best, and then the student leads the discussion. After all 4 houses have led the discussion for their question the teacher will award house points for the question they think is best. The points are entirely up to the teacher, and they may choose to award more or less points based on the strength of your questions. Some days all Houses will earn points, while other days only one house might earn points. It all depends on you and the quality of your efforts.
