Activity #1
Review of key details from Chapter 1
**Take out your Notes**
What is the setting of Chapter 1? (When & Where)
What are the names of our characters?
Why does Harry live with his Aunt & Uncle?
What else do you know about Harry?
What day do the events of chapter 1 take place?
How will Harry be celebrating this special day?

Now, it is time time for...
Best Question:

Depth of Knowledge Levels
Level 1 - Has 1 answer that can be found directly in the text *Does not prompt a discussion because there is only 1 correct answer & it's right in the book

Level 2 - Has an infinite number of answers and puts you, the reader, into the book. *Usually prompts the best discussions if everyone does their reading, because this type of question asks for your opinion about things that are happening in the book, and everyone has an opinion.

Level 3 - Has an infinite number of answers and pulls situations from the book and asks you to apply them to your own life. *Can often prompt great discussions if you ask the right question because these types of questions get people talking about their own lives.

Directions:
(Steps 1 - 3 = 5 Minutes)
Step 1: Meet with the other people in your house, (If numbers are low teachers can combine 2 houses.) and share your questions.

Step 2: Talk about the answers to the questions

Step 3: Discuss which question you think will be the best question for a discussion. Each house needs 1 question & 1 representative to lead the discussion.

(Steps 4 - 5 = 5 - 10 Minutes)
Step 4: Go one house at a time. Read your question out loud. Call on students to respond and discuss. Everyone should be participating.

Step 5: Points are awarded.

When we play "Best Question" your classroom teacher acts as the judge.  After all 4 houses have led the discussion for their question the teacher will award house points for the question they think is best. The points are entirely up to the teacher, and they may choose to award more or less points based on the strength of your questions. Some days all Houses will earn points, while other days only one house might earn points. It all depends on you and the quality of your efforts.

This is what I usually do for best question points.
1st = 20 pts
2nd = 10 pts

Activity #2
Chapter 1 of HP & the C.O.S.
Written Response Quiz

Directions:
Read each question and answer in a complete sentence. YOU MUST ANSWER IN A FULLY DEVELOPED COMPLETE SENTENCE, which includes using proper nouns, words from the question, and specific details. If you do not answer in a complete sentence you will not be able to earn full credit. Sixth grade standards require you to write in fully developed complete sentences, and that will be the expectation on all of your quizzes.

For this reason we will take the time, especially during these first few quizzes, to learn exactly how we should respond to these types of questions.

***For the Quiz you must go to google classroom. We will be going through this quiz nice & slowly, and 1 question at a time. If you follow along with me during this lesson you will be able to earn a 100% on your very first quiz.***

Activity #3
 The 45/60 Second Summary Challenge

Directions:
Welcome to the 60 Second Summary Challenge. In this challenge you will work with the members of your house to write a summary of the chapter. You will have 15 minutes to write. Each house will then choose a representative to read their summary out loud. The readers have 60 seconds to read their summary. The teachers will act as the impartial judges and award points for the best summaries.

As you get better and better at writing summaries we will change it from the 60 second Summary Challenge to the 45 Second Summary Challenge where you will have just 10 minutes to write, & 45 seconds to read your summary. Your summary will be written on the page right next to your notes. (We will set this page up together)

Your summaries should include:
  • the main idea (think mood/big idea)
  • the most important details from the chapter
  • reflection (Your own thoughts about the events of the chapter)

You will be partnered with the people in your house. If you do not have enough people to make a full group, your teacher might combine 2 houses for this activity. I will set the timer for 15 minutes. You will work with your group to discuss the chapter, and each person will write their own summary in their notebooks. Your summaries can be exactly the same, or you can write them in your own words. Make sure you pick someone from each house to be a representative to read their summary out load.

When the timer goes off the 4 representatives will take turns reading their summaries out loud. The readers will have 60 seconds to read. If the timer goes off you have to stop reading immediately

***Each person must write a complete summary & upload a picture. A CLEAR PICTURE WITH NEAT WRITING. ***

As you are working your teachers will come around to provide you with support. Be prepared to let them help you, especially in these first few chapters. As you get better you won't need as much help. Your teachers might ask you questions like:

  • What does your summary need to start with?
  • Have you written the main idea?
  • What did you write for your main idea?
  • What details are you including?
  • Why are those details important?
  • Have you used any transitional words to connect your thoughts and sentences?
  • Are there any places where you should use transitional words or phrases.
  • What are your thoughts on the events of the chapter? (reflection)
  • What do you think about what you read?
  • How do these events show that Harry is a literary hero?
  • Capitals, Periods, Grammar, & Sentence Structure

YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO FOLOW THE RULES OF WRITING.
  • Indent the first sentence
  • All other lines are lined up on the margin line
  • Words go on the line
  • Put spaces between your words
  • Proper capitalization
  • Punctuation
  • Spelling matters (You should not be spelling words from the book incorrectly, especially character's names)
  • Neatness

How will I earn points for my Hogwarts House?
Points are at the discretion of the judge but here is an approximation of how the points might work out.

1st Place = 30 pts
2nd Place = 20 pts
3rd Place = 10 pts
4th Place = 5 pts

As we get farther into the unit, the point values will go up.

How will I be individually evaluated?
Your summaries will regularly be written in your notebook as practice, and handed in as a classwork grade.  However, three times throughout the unit your summaries will be handed in digitally (in google classroom) so we can formally assess your writing.  Your summaries for chapter 5, 10, & 15 will be handed in as quiz grades.
