Activity #1
Review the Plan for Reading
Plan
Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets has 18 chapters. We will read 2 chapters per week, so it will take us about 9 weeks to read this entire novel.

One Chapter on Mon. & Tues.
  • AA students in person
  • BB & virtual Students are on line
One Chapter on Thur. & Fri.
  • AA & Virtual Students are on line
  • BB Students ar in person
There is going to be a shift in the way that the teachers are giving their instruction in the 3rd quarter. There is also going to be a major focus placed on developing our writing skills.

THEREFORE IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU JOIN THE LIVE STREAM LESSON WHEN POSSIBLE DURING THIS UNIT.

I will have a video lesson available like always, but this unit requires a much higher level of participation. The teachers are going to be spending a lot of time supporting you in person, and online through the writing tasks. If you do not join us virtually, and you are solely relying on the videos, we cannot give you support and feedback in the same way we can when you are participating live.

We will be alternating Reading & Writing.
Mon. - Read Chapter 1
Tues. - Write about chapter 1
Wed. - Support
Thur. - Read Chapter 2
Fri. - Write about chapter 2

This pattern then repeats week after week. All groups will be completing the same assignments every day of the week regardless of where they are learning from.

Our goal is to help you become better, more confident writers. The best way for us to do that is in person, be it face to face in the classroom or face to face via a screen.

For each chapter you will be required to do several things to help you with your analysis.
  1. You will complete a set of notes (Reading Day)
  2. You will write a summary  (Writing Day)
  3. You will take a written response quiz  (Writing Day)

Activity #2
Chapter 1 of HP & the C.O.S.
&
Cornell Notes

Directions:
Today we are all going to do Cornell notes as we read chapter 1. This is my favorite type of note taking because it allows you to write questions, important information, and a summary of the chapter. The questions & the summaries will be important for games we play called "Best Question" & the 45 Second Summary Challenge.

As we read you will record important information & questions. When we are done reading you will write a brief summary of the events in chapter 1.

This is how to set up your Notebook.

Discussion Questions:
Who are the characters?
What is the setting? (Time and place)
What is the basic situation our protagonist is in at the beginning of the book? (Exposition)

If Harry is a hero he should be experiencing Act 1 Stage 1 (The Ordinary World) of the Hero's Journey, during these first few chapters. Can you describe how Harry feels out of place living with the Dursley's?

Best Question:
As we read you will have the opportunity to write questions in your notes that you would like to discuss. After Reading we will play "Best Question" whenever time permits. With this game each "House" has to discuss the questions they wrote down and choose one question they think will create the best discussion. You should use your notes about the reading strategy of questioning on pages 8 & 9 of your notebook.

As a refresher, and for all of our new students:

Remember that there are 4 levels of questions. In class we focused on learning how to write levels 1 - 3.

Level 1 - Has 1 answer that can be found directly in the text *Does not prompt a discussion because there is only 1 correct answer & it's right in the book

Level 2 - Has an infinite number of answers and puts you, the reader, into the book. *Usually prompts the best discussions if everyone does their reading, because this type of question asks for your opinion about things that are happening in the book, and everyone has an opinion.

Level 3 - Has an infinite number of answers and pulls situations from the book and asks you to apply them to your own life. *Can often prompt great discussions if you ask the right question because these types of questions get people talking about their own lives.

Examples:
Level 1
Who does Harry Live with?

Level 2
How would you feel if you were Harry and you had to live with the Dursley's? Explain your thinking using evidence from the text.

Level 3
Harry's family ignores his birthday.  What do you and your family do to celebrate your birthday?

When we play "Best Question" your classroom teacher acts as the judge. Each house picks 1 representative to read the question they think is best, and then the student leads the discussion. After all 4 houses have led the discussion for their question the teacher will award house points for the question they think is best. The points are entirely up to the teacher, and they may choose to award more or less points based on the strength of your questions. Some days all Houses will earn points, while other days only one house might earn points. It all depends on you and the quality of your efforts.
