Day 95: 2/8/17 - D Day: Steve Jobs Commencement Address - Part 2 & 3

Good day 6th Graders,      
       As we continue unit 2 about Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Informational Texts we will continue reading closely a commencement speech by Steve Jobs, the founder of the company Apple. Please make sure you have:
  • Red Folder
  • Agenda
  • ELA Notebook
  • Independent Reading book

1. Sharpen Your Pencils
2. Take out the Commencement speech by Steve Jobs.
3. Fill out your Agenda with tonights Homework
Homework:
  • Complete the graphic organizer analyzing Steve Jobs' Rules
  • Bring in an Independent Reading Book

Pass out classwork from Tuesday and allow students to finish their 4 text dependent questions.


Directions for Independent Classwork from Tuesday: 
(You do - 5 - 10  minutes)
  • Use your notes and the information you gathered while working in small group to create written responses to the 4 text dependent questions. Your responses should be written in complete sentences. 
  • Each question is worth 2 points. A perfect score is 8/8.
    • You get 1 point for answering the question.
    • You get 1 point for using evidence to support your answer.

Part 1 - Vocabulary
Standard
RI.6.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, 
including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings.

Last night you reread the 2nd story of Steve Jobs Commencement Address.

Today we are going to look closely at the 2nd and 3rd story. Throughout his speech Steve Jobs uses some very challenging vocabulary. Before we listen to him share his last two stories you will once again work to determine the meaning of the unknown vocabulary.

Essential Question:
What is the meaning of the unknown vocabulary words in the 2nd and 3rd story Steve Jobs shares with the audience?

Your Task: Determine the meaning of unknown vocabulary

Directions for small group: (You Do - 10 Minutes)
  • With your table groups identify the bold faced words.
  • Record them on the left side of your vocabulary T-Chart
  • Read the words in their context.
  • Use the context clues, and other tools provided to you in the reading, to write down a definition in your own words on the right side of your T-Chart.

As we share our responses make sure you evaluate what you wrote. You may change, add to, or modify your definitions.

Part 2 - Listening & Annotating
Standard
RI.6.1 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly
as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Directions for whole group: (We Do - 10 Minutes)
  • Listen to the 2nd and 3rd story of Steve Jobs speech. 
  • Follow along as he speaks. 
  • Annotate in the margins. You can write questions you have & Inferences you make.
  • Underline important information.
  • Pay close attention to the information in paragraphs 12 - 14. You will be allowed to go back and reanalyze what you wrote in last night's homework.






Part 3 - Analyzing & Evaluating

as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Your Task: Respond in writing to Text-Dependent Questions

Directions for Small group: (You do - 10 minutes)







  • In small groups discuss the answers you wrote to the 3 text dependent question. 
  • Review what you wrote and adjust your responses. Make sure the are written in complete sentences. 



















If you finish your classwork early you may begin your homework.

Homework:
  • Complete the graphic organizer analyzing Steve Jobs' Rules.
  • Bring in an Independent Reading Book

RTI - D Day 2/8/17
Step 1 - Pick up an article.
Step 2 - Read through your article to get a basic understanding of what the article is about.
Step 3 - Reread the article a 2nd time and use the Highlighting and annotating Strategy.

Step 4 - Complete the Main Idea Graphic Organizer
***When you are done you will bring your work to me and we will conference about your article. I will be asking:
1. What is the topic of your article?
2. What is the topic sentence?
3. What is the Main Idea?
4. What supporting details led you to think that?
Step 5 - Write a summary

***Enrichment Group may begin thinking about their own speech. You will be writing a persuasive speech about a topic of your own choosing. Think of a topic you would be interested in researching and developing a persuasive speech about. Your topic should be important to yourself and to your peers. It can be controversial, meaning that people have strong feelings regarding the topic or issue. You can begin making an outline, or a web, for your ideas. Additionally, you will need to gather some facts and information to support your opinion, therefore you may research using the computers.
