Day 94: 2/7/17 - C Day: Steve Jobs Commencement Address - Part 1

Good day 6th Graders,      
       As we continue unit 2 about Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Informational Texts we will be reading closely a commencement speech by Steve Jobs, the founder of the company Apple. Please make sure you have:

  • ELA Notebook
  • Independent Reading book

3. Fill out your Agenda with tonights Homework
Homework:
  • Reread Steve Jobs' Second story and answer questions #1-3. Answer in complete sentences.
  • Bring in your Independent Reading Book

Learning Targets
By the end of today's lesson:
  • I will be able to identify the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary from the context.
  • I will be able to examine Steve’s experiences in paragraph 6 - 8 and create written responses to text-dependent questions.
  • I will be able to evaluate the reasons why Steve Jobs has rules to live by, and describe how his rules helped him.

Part 1 - Vocabulary
Standard
RI.6.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, 
including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings.

Last night you read Steve Jobs Commencement Address that he gave at Stanford University on June 12, 2005. In his Speech Steve Jobs shares 3 stories with the audience.

Today we are going to look closely at just his first story. Throughout his speech Steve Jobs uses some very challenging vocabulary. Before we listen to him share his first story let's look at some of this vocabulary.

Essential Question:
What is the meaning of the unknown vocabulary words in the first story Steve Jobs shares with the audience?

Your Task: Determine the meaning of unknown vocabulary

Directions for small group: (We Do - 10 Minutes)
  • With your table groups identify the bold faced words.
  • Record them on the left side of your vocabulary T-Chart
  • Read the words in their context.
  • Use the context clues, and other tools provided to you in the reading, to write down a definition in your own words on the right side of your T-Chart.
(I do) - I will model the first vocabulary word.

(We do - Share responses as a whole group. - 5 minutes)
As we share our responses make sure you evaluate what you wrote. You may change, add to, or modify your definitions.

Part 2 - Listening & Annotating

as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Directions for whole group: (We Do - 5 Minutes)
  • Listen to the first part of Steve Jobs speech. 
  • Follow along as he speaks. 
  • Annotate in the margins. You can write questions you have & Inferences you make.
  • Underline important information.
  • Pay close attention to the information in paragraphs 6 - 8. You will be analyzing some of the things Jobs says in these paragraphs. 






Part 3 - Analyzing & Evaluating

as well as inferences drawn from the text.

W.6.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. 

Your Task: Respond in writing to Text-Dependent Questions


Essential Question:
Can you respond in writing to text dependent questions using evidence to support your thinking?

Directions for Small group: (We do - 10 minutes)
  • In small groups discuss the 4 text dependent question. Make additional annotations directly on the speech, as well as in the question box. Be sure to take good notes. You will be using them to write your answers.


Directions for Independent Work: 
(You do - 15 minutes)
  • Use your notes and the information you gathered while working in small group to create written responses to the 4 text dependent questions. Your responses should be written in complete sentences. 
  • Each question is worth 2 points. A perfect score is 8/8.
    • You get 1 point for answering the question.
    • You get 1 point for using evidence to support your answer.















Homework:
  • Reread Steve Jobs' Second story and answer questions #1-3. Answer in complete sentences.
  • Bring in your Independent Reading Book

RTI - C Day 2/7/17
Step 1 - Pick up an article. We will be choosing an article to do together as a whole group.
Step 2 - Read through your article to get a basic understanding of what the article is about.
Step 3 - Reread the article a 2nd time and use the Highlighting and annotating Strategy.

Step 4 - Complete the Main Idea Graphic Organizer
***When you are done you will bring your work to me and we will conference about your article. I will be asking:
1. What is the topic of your article?
2. What is the topic sentence?
3. What is the Main Idea?
4. What supporting details led you to think that?


Step 5 - Write a summary
