Day 8: 9/15/16 - Unit 1: Figurative Language & Ch. 3 & 4 Freak the Mighty

Good Morning 6th Graders,
Homeroom:       
         Today is a 'C' Day, so we will go to Gym. Please order your lunch, & unstack ALL of the chairs. We will b going to a presentation about the code of conduct this morning, so we will be using time at the end of the day to make up what we miss during block 1.

          Please begin copying today's notes in your ELA notebook. Be sure to date them and write neatly.

Reading Notes
9/15/16 - Figurative Language
  • Figurative Language is when words go beyond their literal meaning
  • Simile - uses the words 'like' or 'as' to compare one thing with another. 
      • Ex: She was as busy as a bee. He played like a beast during the basketball game.
  • Metaphor - makes a direct comparison between one thing and another. 
      • Ex: He was a beast during the basketball game.
  • Personification - when human characteristics are given to an animal or nonliving object.
      • Ex: my teddy bear gave me a hug. The lightening danced across the sky. The wind howled.
  • Hyperbole - An exaggeration that is so dramatic that no one would believe the statement is true. Often used to make a point. 
      • Ex: He's got a million video games. Redbull - It gives you wings!

The Legend of King Arthur will be referenced by Kevin throughout the novel Freak the Mighty. It is important that you are familiar with this legend.

Today's writing Theme = Friendship
Directions:
I want you to engage in narrative writing for 15 minutes about the theme of friendship. You might write a short story about two or more friends. You might write a narrative about yourself and something you did with one of you best friends, or about how you met. It is up to you. You will be asked to write for a total of 15 sustained minutes. When you are done we will spend a few minutes looking at each others writing and examining it for how it shows the theme of friendship. 


Independent Readers
Standard RL6.1 - Making Inferences and using evidence to support your thinking

Today we will start to build our reading stamina by reading for a total of 10 minutes. While you read I want you to make inferences about the main characters in your story.
  • use sticky notes to annotate your book. 
  •  Notes should be about characterization or the four types of figurative language we took notes on today
Homework:
Finish Reading Chapter 4. Complete figurative language graphic organizer.
