Day 6: 9/13/16 - Unit 1: Collaborative Discussions & Intro to Narrative Writing

Good Morning 6th Graders,
Homeroom:       
         Today is an 'A' Day, so we will go to Gym. Please order your lunch & unstack ALL of the chairs.
ELA,
          Please be sure to sharpen your pencils, and find your assigned seat. Then work on the anticipation guide for Freak the Mighty. We will use your answers to engage in an academic discussion.

Academic Discussion
Standard SL6.1 Engage effectively in collaborative discussions

Directions: Use the Anticipation guide questions to engage in an academic discussion about the questions on the anticipation guide. Then use your characterization graphic organizer to discuss what you know about Max. Refer to the text to underline evidence.
What inferences can you make about the character of Max?

  • What is expected of you when engaging in an academic discussion?
  • What does accountable talk look & sound like?

Independent Reading
Today we will start to build our reading stamina by reading for a total of 10 minutes. While you read I want you to make inferences about the main characters in your story.
  • use sticky notes to annotate your book. 
  • Annotate = to take notes
  •  Notes should be about characterization
Before Reading:
  • Create Independent Reading I-Chart
After Reading:
  • What is the title of your book & is it a good fit for you?
  • Who are the main characters?
  • What inferences have you made about your characters?
  • How do you know? (What is your evidence?)

Standard W6.3 Write Narratives using effective technique, relative descriptive details, and a well structured sequence

Create I-Chart

Today's writing Theme = Friendship
Directions:
I want you to engage in narrative writing for 15 minutes about the theme of friendship. You might write a short story about two or more friends. You might write a narrative about yourself and something you did with one of you best friends, or about how you met. It is up to you. You will be asked to write for a total of 15 sustained minutes. When you are done we will spend a few minutes looking at each others writing and examining it for how it shows the theme of friendship.

Standard RI6.1 Making inferences about an Informational text and supporting it with relevant evidence

Directions:
Read the Legend of King Arthur, which will be referenced throughout the novel Freak the Mighty, and answer the comprehension questions.
