Example

Would you be willing run away from your foster home to follow your heart to try to make your dreams come true? In the Novel Bud, Not Buddy, that is exactly what the main character does. Bud risks it all so that he can go find his father in Grand Rapids. Now that Bud is living in Grand Rapids with Herman E. Calloway’s Band his life is very different from when he was living in Flint.
When Bud was living in Flint he had to live in an orphanage, or at a foster home with people who didn’t treat him well, like the Amoses. The Amoses were so mean to him they locked him in a shed, and Bud had to escape from the shed in the middle of the night. In Grand Rapids Bud gets to live with Miss Thomas and Herman E. Calloway. He even gets his own bedroom to sleep in. In addition, Bud gets to hang out with all of Herman E. Calloways band members, and learns how to play music with them.
In Flint when Bud escaped from the Amoses he had to go on the lam and go to the mission to get many of his meals. The mission is a place where men, women, and children who have no money and nothing to eat could go to receive a free meal, and it was always the same thing to eat for everyone. In Grand Rapids Bud gets to go out to eat in restaurants where he gets to order anything he wants to eat.
Since leaving Flint for Grand Rapids Bud’s life has improved greatly. Someday Bud might even become a famous musician if he keeps practicing. Although he wasn’t able to fulfill his dream of finding his father, I think he is going to love living with his grandfather Herman E. Calloway, even if his grandpa is a bit on the grumpy side. Maybe Bud and Herman living together will change Herman’s life as much as it has already changed Bud’s.

Homework
Read for 20 minutes every day and have a restful, and rejuvenating vacation. Come back after your spring break prepared to work hard and ready to attack those state tests with vigor.
