Day #112 - 3/13/15 - Mod 2A Unit 2 Lesson 5 Part I: If - Stanza #2 & Ch.17 of Bud, Not Buddy

Good Morning Rebels, 
           It is a ‘C' day so we will go to Library & Technology.  Please order your lunch and sharpen your pencils.  If you can practice, and persevere through the challenges that come your way, then you can become anything you want. Don’t forget to be awesome toward each other! Please pick up an Ipad and work on the Point to Ponder.

Analyzing the Meaning of the Poem “If” in order to Paraphrase Stanza 2

Key Questions:
  • What does it mean to paraphrase?

 for Stanza #2:
  • What does  Kipling mean when he says “dreams?”
  • What does it mean to not make dreams your master?
  • Can you paraphrase the first “If” statement?
  • What does it mean to think and not make thoughts your aim?
  • Can you paraphrase the second “If” statement?
  • What does it mean to meet with triumph and disaster?
  • What’s an impostor?
  • What does it mean to treat those two impostors just the same? 
  • Can you paraphrase the third “If” statement?
  • What does “to bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken” mean?
  • What is a knave?
  • What does twisted by knaves mean?
  • What is a “Trap for fools?”
    • Hint: think about Bud and Bugs and their coin flip

Activity #2
What are the rules that are suggested in stanza 2?
Directions: 

  • Work with your small group members to write down as many of the rules from stanza 2 that you can.
  • Choose one person to be the Scribe.
  • Write the rules on a piece of scrap paper.

Stanza #1
  1. Maintain control even when others are losing control.
  2. Trust yourself even when others are doubting you.
  3. Don’t hold a grudge against other people when they doubt you.
  4. Don’t make time for lies .
  5. Don’t lie or listen to other people’s lies about you.
  6. Don’t hate people or worry about people who hate you.
  7. Don’t boast or brag about yourself too much: control your ego.
  8. Don’t let others lead you off your path.
Stanza #2
  1. Have goals for your life but don’t let your goals control you.
  2. You should think carefully about things, but it’s not enough to just think, you must go beyond your thoughts to actions.
  3. Don’t let winning and losing change who you are.
  4. Be mindful of what you say. Some people might try to call you a liar or turn your words into lies.
  5. When you lose something you care strongly about or that you have worked for your whole life, you need to start over.
