Day 32: 10/20/22 - Review of Theme & Freak the Mighty Chapter 17 & 18

          Good Morning, I hope you are all having a thinktastic Thursday. Please use this time to get ready for your day.

  2. Check to see if you have all your materials

          Today we will continue to learn about theme, and then read chapter 17 & 18 of Freak the Mighty.

Practice with Theme
Review Christian the Lion (If Needed)
I can write a statement about one of the themes for the novel Freak the Mighty.
Vocabulary:
  • vicar - a representative that makes decisions for a church
  • flat - a flat is what the people in England call an apartment
  • undaunted - not discouraged by difficulty or danger

Directions for Theme Practice:

*Remember Theme is like the message, or lesson, of the story?

Step 1: Think about the story of Freak the Mighty and list some theme topics on the trunk of the theme tree (Use your notebook)

Step 2: Pick the topic that you think is the strongest, best, or most interesting.

Step 3: Find, and record in your graphic organizer, four pieces of text evidence from Freak the Mighty. (Like we did with Christian the Lion) Think - what happened in the story that made me think about this theme/topic. 

Step 4: Analyze your text evidence and think about the message, or lesson, you learn. Ask yourself, "What can I learn about ____________ ?"

Step 5: Write your "Theme Statement" on the lines provided.

Read Chapter 17 & 18
I can read chapters 17 & 18 of Freak the Mighty and record my thinking, including inferences I make, about the literary elements listed below.

Directions:
Complete each section of the graphic organizer

  • Characters - Write as much as you learn
  • Plot - 8-10 Bullets
  • Questions - 2 to 3 questions
  • Conflict - Write down any conflicts that you see.
