Day 9 9/24/20 - Figurative Language Practice & FTM Ch. 4

Good Morning 6th Graders,
          Please make sure you have everything you need. Today we will practice finding figurative language, and we will continue reading Freak the Mighty.

  • Put your HW from ch. 2 & 3 on your desk so I can check to see that you got it done

  • Finish reading Ch 4
  • Complete the Figurative Language Reading Guide

Before we read...review Ch 2 & 3 Fig Language Reading guide

  • What happened in chapters 2 & 3?
  • What did you learn about the characters?
  • What do you know about the setting?
  • Can you describe the "basic situation" of the story?
  • What figurative language did you find?
  • What type of figurative language is it?
  • What does it mean?

Reading Strategy - Annotating a Text
While you read it is important to annotate what you are reading. This will allow you to comprehend what you are reading and make more accurate inferences about the reading.
  • Use the back of your reading guide to record important information or questions you have while reading. Notes could be about:
  1. Characters
  2. Setting
  3. Plot
  4. Themes
  5. Conflicts
  6. Figurative Language

Key Questions:
  • Why does Kevin refer to his mom as "the Fair Gwen of Air"?
  • Describe the similarities between King Arthur's men and robots.
  • Explain what Kevin means when he says, "Books are like truth serum-if you don't read you can't figure out what is real."
  • List all the ways Kevin and Max are opposites.
  • What other inferences can you make?
  • How do you know? (What is your evidence?)
