Day 59: 12/4/19 - C Day: Problem & solution Text Structure & Ch 15 Analyzing Setting

Good day 6th Graders,      
         Today we will be continue unit 2 about Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Informational Texts. Please make sure you have all your materials.

Do Now:
  • Write down tonight's homework
  • Pick up a copy of the Problem & Solution graphic organizer
  • Get 2 different colors of colored pencil or crayon
Homework: 
  • Read Chapter 15 & Complete the Graphic Organizer analyzing setting

Activity #1
Text Structure: Problem & Solution

Standards
  • RI6.5 - Analyze how a particular sentence, paragraph, or chapter fit into the overall structure of a text and how it contributes to the development of ideas. 
Directions:

Step 1: Review the 5 different forms of text structure.
Step 2: Review the Definition for Problem & Solution Text Structure
Step 3: Read the paragraph about leash pulling
Step 4: Reread the article and underline the details to determine the details pertaining to the problem and those that pertain to the solution
Step 5: Complete the graphic organizer
Step 6: Cut, & Glue in the graphic organizer into your ELA Interactive Notebook

Read-a-loud Ch. 15 - Analyzing Setting
Standards:
RL6.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone

    Part 1
    Essential Question for Chapter 14:
    • What type of figurative language was used in each of the passages?
    Directions for part 1: You do - (8 min)
    Mix & Mingle
    • Get up out of your seat and find a partner to share your homework responses with.
      • Give your partner 1 of the answers on your graphic organizer.
      • Get one answer from your partner. 
      • You may fill in empty boxes, change answers, or add to the answers you already have.
      • When the whistle blows find a new partner
      • Repeat the process of Giving one response, and getting one response. 
      • Bring your book with you to support your thinking. You must be able to support your your thinking with evidence from the text!!!
      • Complete 6 rounds - one for each example of figurative language
      • When you are done we will go over it as a whole group

    • Part 2
    Essential Question for Chapter 15:
    • Where does this part of the story take place?
    • What time does this part of the story take place?
    • How and why is the setting important to the story?
    • What is the mood, and atmosphere created?
