Day 147: 5/13/26 - Research Stage 2: Reading Articles & Gathering Info Day #3

 Homeroom:

          Good Morning. Please use this time to get ready for your day.

Do Now:

  1. Check that your homework is done
  2. Make sure you have all your materials
  3. Sharpen pencils
At the end of 4th Block tell all students to put ALL materials away in their locker except for a writing utensil.
Coming over will be Kristi Boudreau (along with some students) and Rick Algie.

7th Grade Schedule Presentation1:51 - 2:15
Foreign Language Presentation   2:20 - 2:45
Transition back to HR (get chairs reorganized etc.....)

ELA Learning Target:  

Today we will finish stage 2 of Research by reading through our resources and gathering information.

Do Now: 
1. Write down your homework
2. Go to page 86
3. Pick up a copy of the Outline for the Research Project

Homework:
  • Read through the articles and websites that you found & Complete the Gathering Info Graphic Organizers (1 organizer for each resource)
  • Start getting materials for Learning Fair Project
    • Trifold Presentation Board 
    • Boxes
    • Decorative tape
    • Letter stencils or stickers
    • Special Markers or Paints
    • Other items specific to your model

Research Stage 2
Reading Articles & Gathering Info
Goal:
You will have met today's goal when you have read at least 2 of your resources and gathered 8 - 10 bullets of information from each article.

Stage 1: Finding Resources:
  1. Use our online databases to find, save, and print at least 2 - 3 articles 
  2. Use the internet to find and bookmark 2 - 3 Web Pages
  3. Use the cart to find books on your topic
You want the resources to discuss: 
  • the Problem/Issue
  • the Causes, or Pro's
  • the Effects, or Con's
  • the Solutions
Your resources should be from trusted sources like National Geographic, NY Times, Washington Post, Scholastic, etc. You want your articles and web pages to contain scientific data and statistics. When you assemble your project, keep in mind that you will need to include at least one chart, graph, or diagram. 

When you find an article that you think is good, you should print it, and send it to your google Drive. 

To get to the databases: (Go through Clever - Library)
Select: Gale - A cengage company

Stage 2: Gathering Information: 
  • Read each article, website, or book & use one graphic organizer for each one. Be sure to record all the important information from your resources onto the "Gathering Info" graphic organizer, including:
- Title of the article
- Name of the resource, or Web page
- Important Info

You are specifically looking for information that will help you explain:
  • The Problem/Issue
  • The Causes (or the Pros)
  • The Effects (or the Cons)
  • The Solutions

Stage 3: Outlining & Organizing Information

Now that you have gathered information it is time to organize it to make it easier to put together your Learning Fair Presentation.

Your Goal:
Take all of the information you gathered and organize it according to:
  • Problem/Issue
  • Causes (or Pro's)
  • Effects (or Cons)
  • Solutions 
Steps:
  • Read, review, and label each piece of information
  • For Cause & Effect:
    • P = Problem
    • C = Causes
    • E = Effects
    • S = Solution
  • For Pros & Cons
    • I = Issue
    • P = Pros
    • C = Cons
    • S = Solutions & Conclusion
  • Count how many bullets you have in each category
  • Identify gaps in your research (Fill them)
  • Once you have enough information, complete the outline.
  • Write information in the appropriate category. Think about the order of your bullets. You can edit and revise them
