Day 44: 11/8/23 - Theme & Christian the Lion

 Homeroom:

          Good Morning, I hope you are all having a wonderfully wonderful Wednesday. Please use this time to get ready for your day.

Do Now:

  1. Check that your homework is done
  2. Check to see if you have all your materials
  3. Sharpen pencils
ELA:

Good Day 6th Graders,

          Today we will learn about theme, and try to identify some of the themes within the book, Freak the Mighty.

Do Now:

  • Write the independent work in your agenda
  • Open your chromebooks to your mini-essay
Independent work:
  • Past due assignments


Activity #1
Evaluate Writing 
(10 - 15 minutes)

Directions:
  • Use Name sticks to set up writing partners. 
  • With your writing partner evaluate each part of your mini essay
  • At the bottom of your writing set up your answer like this:
    • I =
    • C =
    • E =
    • R =
    • M =
    • Total =
Each paragraph should have
  1. 1 point - Introduction
  2. 1 point - Claim
  3. 1 point - Evidence (from both the book and movie)
  4. 1 point - Reflection
  5. 1 point - Mechanics = Capitals, punctuation, sentence structure
  • Each paragraph is worth 5 points total. 
  • Include your score, so I can see how you evaluated your own writing before I grade it.
  • Submit your writing. 

Activity #2
Intro to Theme
(25 - 30 minutes)
Christian the Lion 
Step 1 - Pass out & Glue in the list of topics on the next page of your notebook (Be sure to write the date, title, and page number) Review the definition of theme.

Step 2 - Pass out & Glue in the Theme tree for Christian the Lion.  (Be sure to write the date, title, and page number)

Step 3 - Review a few of the vocabulary words from the video

Vocabulary:
  • vicar - a representative that makes decisions for a church
  • flat - a flat is what the people in England call an apartment
  • undaunted - not discouraged by difficulty or danger
Step 4 - Watch the Video
Step 5 - Start with the trunk of the tree. The trunk has a list of thematic topics listed on it. Choose the strongest topic. The strongest topics are LOVE & FRIENDSHIP
Step 6 - Discuss the evidence from the video, which is listed on the branches. The evidence describes what happened in the video
Step 7 - Discuss the theme. The theme is the lesson. In this case you should ask yourself, "What can I learn about love and friendship from watching this video?"

Identifying Themes in Freak the Mighty

Directions:

Step 1: Think about the story of Freak the Mighty and list some theme topics on the trunk of the theme tree (Use your notebook)

Step 2: Pick the topic that you think is the strongest, best, or most interesting.

Step 3: Find, and record in your graphic organizer, four pieces of text evidence from Freak the Mighty. (Like we did with Christian the Lion) Think - what happened in the story that made me think about this theme/topic. 

Step 4: Analyze your text evidence and think about the message, or lesson, you learn. Ask yourself, "What can I learn about ____________ ?"

Step 5: Write your "Theme Statement" on the lines provided.
