Activity #1
Pick a Topic
Goal:
You will have met today's goal when you have picked a topic for your research essay.

Standards:
RI6.8 - Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, distinguishing claims that are supported by reasons and evidence from claims that are not.

Directions:
Use our online databases to find & Save in your google drive at least 2 scholarly articles about your environmental issue. You will ultimately need 4 - 6 articles in all. You may also use the internet as a whole, but only after you begin with scholarly articles.

You want the resources to discuss:
  • the Problem/Issue
  • the Causes, or Pro's
  • the Effects, or Con's
  • the Solutions

Your resources should be from trusted sources like National Geographic, NY Times, Washington Post, Scholastic, etc. You want your articles to contain scientific data and statistics. When you assemble your project, keep in mind that you will need to include at least one chart, graph, or diagram. Your articles should not be:
  • blogs
  • lists
  • debates
  • opinions
  • etc.

When you find an article that you think is good, you should Send it to your google Drive. Be sure to also send the citation.

*Remember 1 - 2 resources must be primary sources.
*The other 3 - 4 resources can be secondary sources.

To get to the databases: (Go through Clever - Library)
1. go to the APW web page
2. Click on Schools
3. Click on the Junior/Senior High School
4. On the Left Hand Side, scroll down and click on Library
5. Click On Online Resources
6. Click on Databases
Username: apwhs
Password: search

Or go to Mrs. Bostick's Library Page through Clever

Under Newspapers & magazines  you can use any of those databases, but I would try:
New (Gale Onefile)
Kids infobits

Next Step:
Once you have 4 - 6 resources you will use the "Gathering Info" graphic organizer to record important information for your research essay and project. Read each article & use one graphic organizer per article. Be sure to record all the important information from your article onto the graphic organizer, including:
- Title of the article
- Name of the resource
***These 2 things are very important. You will be creating a reference page!
- Important Info
- Quality of the resource

You are specifically looking for information that will help you explain:
  • The Problem/Issue
  • The Causes (or the Pros)
  • The Effects (or the Cons)
  • The Solutions
