Day 124: 4/1/20 - D Day: Picking a Research Topic & Research Day #1

Good day 6th Graders,
Today we will be picking topics for our Learning Fair Projects and we will begin finding articles on our topic.
                        Thank you,
                        Mr. Trumble
Do Now:
1. Write down your homework

Homework:

  • Begin reading any articles that you found

Activity #1
Picking a topic

Completing the Research Graphic Organizer

Activity #2
Research Day #1 - Finding Resources
Goal:
You will have met today's goal when you have found at least 2 scholarly articles that you can use for your research essay.

Standards:
RI6.8 - Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, distinguishing claims that are supported by reasons and evidence from claims that are not.

Directions:
Use our online databases to find & Print at least 2 scholarly articles about your environmental issue. You will ultimately need 4 - 6 articles in all.
You want the resources to discuss:
  • the problem
  • the causes, or Pro's
  • the effects, or Con's
  • the solutions

Your articles should be full, complete articles from trusted sources like national geographic, NY Times, Washington Post, etc. You want your articles to contain scientific data and statistics. When you assemble your project, keep in mind that you will need to include at least one chart, graph, or diagram. Your articles should not be:
  • blogs
  • lists
  • debates
  • opinions
  • etc.

When you find an article that you think is good, you should print it

*Remember 1 - 2 resources must be primary sources.
*The other 3 - 4 resources can be secondary sources.

To get to the databases:
1. go to the APW web page
2. Click on Schools
3. Click on the Junior/Senior High School
4. On the Left Hand Side, scroll down and click on Library
5. Click On Online Resources
6. Click on Databases

Password: search

Under Newspapers & magazines  you can use any of those databases, but I would try:
New (Gale Onefile)
Kids infobits

Next Step:
Once you have 4 - 6 resources you will use the "Tracing Arguments" graphic organizer to record important information for your research essay and project. Read each article & use one graphic organizer per article. Be sure to record all the important information from your article onto the graphic organizer, including:
- Title of the article
- Name of the resource
***These 2 things are very important. You will be creating a reference page!
- Important Info
- Quality of the resource
