Day 103: 3/2/20 - C Day: Mix & Mingle, Analyzing Conflicts, & Harry Potter Ch. 17

Good day 6th Graders,      
       Today we will continue unit 3, Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Fictional Texts by reading Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets. Today we will be doing Mix & Mingle, the 45 Second Summary Challenge, and we will begin reading chapter 17.

Do Now: 
1. Find your Hogwarts House Table and have a seat
2. Write your homework down in your agenda
3. Take out your homework from chapter 16
Homework:
  • Finish Reading Ch 17
  • Complete the Analyzing Conflicts Graphic Organizer


Activity #1
Mix & Mingle
Standards
SL6.1 - Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners.

W6.4 - Produce clear & coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Directions: 
  • We will do 5 rounds of Mix & Mingle (You know how it's done)
  • Each round you will have an opportunity to share, discuss, and review your answers
  • Make any improvements or changes you want.
  • At the end of Mix & Mingle you will be handing in your work for a grade.

Activity #2
Summarizing Plot 
&
 The 45 second Summary Challenge

Standards
SL6.1 - Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners.

W6.4 - Produce clear & coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Directions:
1. Collaborate & work with the members of your house.
2. Then, in your notebook, you will each write a summary of the events in chapter 10. 
3. Your summaries should include:
  • The main idea or topic sentence (think 'mood')
  • The most important details from the chapter
  • Your reflection (Opinion or thoughts)

4. You will then choose 1 person from your house to read their summary out loud as part of the 45 second summary challenge. The winning house will receive 25 points for their house!

Analyzing Conflicts

Standards:
RL6.1 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text 
RL6.2 Determine a theme of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text 
RL6.3 Describe how a particular story's plot unfolds in a series of episodes (Sequence of events) as well as how the characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution

Directions:
Listen to chapter 17 as I read aloud. You will then use the graphic Organizer to analyze the types of conflicts Harry experiences throughout the book.


Key Questions
  • Can you identify one example of each type of conflict?
  • What evidence or details can you use from the text to support your thinking?

    • Man vs. Society
    • Man vs. Self

Goal: To read fictional texts for enjoyment and discuss them with a group of our peers in order to improve our comprehension.

    • What notes/inferences did you make based on today's reading?
    • What questions do you have? (Use D.O.K.)
