Standards

RI6.5 - Analyze how a particular sentence, paragraph, or chapter fit into the overall structure of a text and how it contributes to the development of ideas.

Directions:

Step 1: Review the 5 different forms of text structure.

Step 2: Review the Definition for Compare/Contrast structure - The author discusses similarities & differences between people, things, concepts, or ideas.

Step 3: Read the compare/contrast article about Chihuahuas and Collies.

Step 4: Reread the article and underline the details pertaining to each

Step 5: Complete the graphic organizer

Step 6: Cut, & Glue in the graphic organizer into your ELA Interactive Notebook

Overview of Text Structure

Standards:

RI6.5 Analyze how a particular sentence, paragraph, chapter, or section fits into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of the ideas.

Direction:

It is important that you can identify the author's purpose for writing a text, but it is just as important that you can identify the way the author structures their text. There are several different structures authors use to write texts. Today we will be learning about the 5 most common structures used in nonfiction writing.

Activity #2

Read-a-loud Ch. 11 - Comparing Characters

Standards:

RL6.2 'Provide a summary of a text distinct from personal opinions'

RL6.3 'Describe how characters respond and change as the plot moves forward'

Part 1

Essential Question for chapter 10:

What important events did you include in a summary of chapter 10?

The 60-Second Summary Challenge

Work in small groups to discuss the events of chapter 10.
Write a topic sentence.

Tip: Think about the mood that was created.
Example: Chapter 10 of Bud, Not Buddy was very suspenseful.

Include the 5 most important details and write them in your summary.
Choose a representative from your group to read your summary out loud.

Part 2

Essential Questions for Chapter 11:

How are these characters alike?

How are these characters different?

Directions:

As we read think about the three different families Bud has encountered. Record information in the graphic organizer to describe each family. Then write a paragraph about how they are alike and how they are different. Use the back of the worksheet or lined paper to draft your response.

Author's Purpose Assessment

Standards:

RI6.6 Determine an author's point of view, or purpose, in a text and explain how it is conveyed in the text

Direction:

Step 1 - Review Homework using the Mix and Mingle Protocol that we learned yesterday to share responses to your Author's purpose practice

Step 2 - Independently read each passage and circle author's purpose that corresponds with that passage

Review of Chapters 8 & 9

RL6.1 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text

Directions for part 1: You do - (8 min)

Mix & Mingle (Also Know as Give One to Get One)

Get up out of your seat and find a partner to share your homework responses with.

Give your partner 1 of the answers on your graphic organizer.
Get one answer from your partner.
You may fill in empty boxes, change answers, or add to the answers you already have.
When the whistle blows find a new partner
Repeat the process of Giving one response, and getting one response.
Bring your book with you to support your thinking. You must be able to support your your thinking with evidence from the text!!!

Author's have a variety of reasons, or purposes, for writing a text. As a reader it is your job to determine what that purpose is! It will help you to analyze their writing, and will allow you to make more informed inferences and conclusions about what you have read.
