1. What is Reading Block?
This is a time dedicated to reading. Most of the time you will be reading novels for Mr. Trumble's ELA Class. Other times you will be reading articles for Science & Social Studies, or Independent Reading.
One of our 6th grade expectations is that you should always have an independent reading book on you. This is a book that is separate from the novels you read for language arts.
At NO POINT should you be playing games on your computer during school. If your work is done, and done well, you should get out your independent reading book and read. There is to be absolutely no playing games on your computers! Ever!

2. How to pick a book that is "Just Right" for you?
- You want to choose a book that is new to you.
- Look at the cover and Read the title
- Read the back cover. This will usually give you some information about the story and maybe a brief summary.
- Review the length of the book. You know yourself best when it comes to the length of books that you can handle
- Once you have selected a book that you are interested in you are ready to begin reading.
- Commit yourself to reading at least the first chapter, or part, so you can accurately evaluate if the book is just right for you.

To evaluate if the book is "Just Right" for you ask yourself the questions below
Is it an Easy Book?
- Is it one of your favorites?
- Can you read and understand almost every word?
- Do you know almost every word by heart?
- Can you read it all very Smoothly?
If so, then the book is probably too easy for you!

Is it a Hard book?
- Are there more than 5 words on a page that you do not know?
- Are you puzzled about what is happening in most of the book?
- When you read, does it sound choppy?
- Are you losing interest because you're having a difficult time reading it.
If so, then the book is probably too hard for you!

Is it a "Just Right" book?
- Is this book new to you?
- Do you understand a lot of the book?
- Are there less than 5 words on a page you don't know?
- Is your reading smooth?
- Are there just a few places where you need to slow down and figure out some words?
If so, then the book is probably "Just Right" for you!
3. Now it is time for Independent Reading
- Get out your independent reading book, or select an independent reading book from your classroom library
- Today you will read for 10 minutes.
- Each day for the first week we will add a few minutes to build our stamina up to 20 minutes.
- What are you reading? (Title)
- What is it about?
- Is your book "Just Right" for you?
- Question Time - After each student shares it is time for questions from their peers. Examples include:
- Who are the main characters?
- What do you know about the characters?
- Which character would you be friends with? why?
- What is your favorite part?
- Did anything surprise you?
- What is the setting? Where and when does the story take place?
- Etc...
