Activity #1
Types of Characters
I can analyze characters in a story to determine what type of character they are.

Notes:
Every Story has different types of characters

1. Characters can be either Protagonist, Antagonist, or neither

2. Characters can be either Flat or Round

3. Characters can be either Static or Dynamic

4. Characters can be either Sympathetic or Minor

Directions:
  1. Use your notes on page 24 along with your knowledge of the characters in Freak the Mighty to analyze the different types of characters
  2. You will be working with random groups today
  3. Your goal is to complete the Character Analysis Chart
  4. We will do one character together to get you started

Activity #2
Compare/Contrast Mini-Essay (Part 3)

I can write a 2 paragraph mini-essay comparing & contrasting the book Freak the Mighty with the movie, The Mighty.

Standards:
RL6.7 - Compare & Contrast the experience of reading a story to viewing a video, including contrasting what you "see" or "hear" when reading the text to what you perceive when you view the movie.

Directions:

  • Write 1 paragraph describing how part 3 of the book and the movie are the same.
  • Write 1 paragraph describing how part 3 of the book and the movie are different
  • Use I, C, E, R format
    • Remember you can have multiple claims, and you should include as much as evidence as you can
  • You will be required to write in complete sentences, using specific details.
  • You will submit your writing and it will count as an assesment grade.
  • DO NOT RUSH! Take your time and do your best!
Important: (for part 3)
  • Focus on the Literary Elements we have studied when thinking about the similarities and differences.
  • Characterization - Are the characters developed in the movie the same as the book?
  • Setting - How do the settings compare? Include the way you envisioned the setting in the book to what you see in the movie.
  • ****Plot**** - This is the big one you should focus on for part 3. How do the events in the movie compare to the events in the book? You should write about the following parts of plot.
    • Climax
    • Falling Action
    • Resolution
  • Conflicts - Do the conflicts get resolved the same way in the movie as they do in the book?

Remember to use this format:
  1. Introduction
  2. Claim
  3. Evidence
  4. Reflection

Here is my Example from the 1st part of the book/movie:

There are many similarities between the book, “Freak the Mighty” and the movie, “The Mighty”. The first similarity worth noting is the way the characters are portrayed and developed throughout the story. In the book and in the movie Max feels like he is stupid and does not have a brain.  HE lives with his grandparents because is mom is dead and his dad is in prison. In a like manner, Kevin believes he is a freak because of his physical disability. He is super smart and he talks like a dictionary in the film and in the novel. Another similarity between the book nd the movie is the plot, specifically the event where Max and Kevin go to the fireworks. In both the story and the movie the boys have an encounter with a character named Tony D. which leads to them being chased down. In this scene Kevin acts as the brain telling Max what to do, and Max acts as the body carrying Kevin. They have to work together to save each other from Tony.  Overall, I think the movie does a good job of recreating the plot from the novel for movie goers. If you like the book, you will probably enjoy the film.

There are many differences between the book, “Freak the Mighty” and the movie, “The Mighty”. The first major difference between the book and the movie is the way Max and Kevin’s friendship begins. In the book their friendship begins when Max helps Kevin get a toy ornithopter out of a tree.  It is this small act of kindness that starts their friendship in the novel, but in the movie their friendship starts when Kevin becomes Max’s tutor. Kevin then gives Max money to take him to the fireworks. Another difference between the two is the setting. When reading the book I picture a small run down town, and in the movie the setting is a large heavy populated city. In my opinion the book does a better job telling the story of Max and Kevin becoming Freak the Mighty. I recommend reading the book before watching the movie.

Have a great day!
