Please be sure to sharpen your pencils. Next find your assigned seat. Then Glue in the List of ELA Standards on page 3 & 4 of your ELA notebook. Lastly, you may quietly read at your seat.

- Authors use a variety of strategies and devices to help them develop and craft their stories.
- These strategies are known as the Elements of Literature, or Literary Elements.
- Some Literary elements include:
- Characterization
- Theme
- Conflict
- Symbolism
- Allusion
- Setting
- Plot
- Style
- Tone
- Figurative Language
- Personification
- Characterization
- What kinds of people are the characters?
- What are their beliefs, hopes, fears, strengths, weaknesses, talents, etc...?
- What are your opinions of the character?
- There are four ways in which an author develops characters.
- 1. Physical Description of the character
- 2. What the character says
- 3. What the character does
- 4. What others say about the character
