Day 17: 9/28/16 - Learning Stations & Conflict

Good Morning 6th Graders,
Homeroom:       
         Today is a 'B' Day. Don't forget to order your lunch and unstack ALL the chairs
ELA,
          Make sure that you have your independent reading book. Today we will continue Learning Stations. Please pick up an Ipad and use Safari to go to our classroom website. Lastly, glue in the Internal & External conflict worksheets in to your ELA Notebook.

Learning Station Groups

Station #1
Independent Reading
  • Standard RL6.1 - Making Inferences and using evidence to support your thinking
  • Standard RL6.2 - Provide a summary of a text 
Today you will continue to build your reading stamina. While you read make inferences & annotate your book. 
  •  Notes should be about Figurative Language, characterization, important plot events, or Conflict
Station #2
Technology
  • SL6.1 Engage Effectively in a range of collaborative discussions
  • Standard RL6.2 - Provide a summary of a text
  • Standard W6.6 - Use technology to publish writing & collaborate with others & demonstrate a command of keyboarding skills
1. Finish your OpenEd Assessment on Leading a group discussion & on Plot

2. Log on to kidblog and create a post about your independent reading book. Write about the:
Conflict
Plot
Figurative Language
Characterization

Give your post the title: "Independent Reading Book - (Insert Book Title)" When you are done read other people's post and collaborate about the books you are reading.

Station #3
Word Work
  • Standard RL6.4 - Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases

Then...
Use the Frayer Model to create a visual display of a vocabulary word from Freak the Mighty on a piece of plain white paper

When you finish please place your Frayer Model into the Red bin for your block 

Parts of a Frayer Model:
  1. Vocabulary Word - Should be written LARGELY and in the center of your diagram
  2. Definition - Kid Friendly and in your own words.  Include the part of speech it is (Noun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb)
  3. Characteristics - Include the sentence from the text that contained your chosen vocabulary word.
  4. Example - Write down all examples of the word including Synonyms(Words that mean the same)
  5. Non-example - Write down all antonyms (Words that mean the opposite)
  6. ****Include an illustration. at the bottom of your model****

Writing

  • Standard W6.3 Write Narratives using effective technique, relative descriptive details, and a well structured sequence
Today's writing Theme = Friendship
Directions:
I want you to engage in narrative writing about the theme of friendship. You might write a short story about two or more friends. You might write a narrative about yourself and something you did with one of you best friends, or about how you met. It is up to you.  Once everyone has been to the writing station we will look at each others writing and examine it for how it shows the theme of friendship. 

*Hand in your finished narratives in to the red bin.

***If you finish you may work on your College Pennant***

Homework: Finish reading chapter 10 and complete 3-5 annotations about conflicts or important events for the Plot line
