Scrabble

Basic Rules

Here is a brief overview of Scrabble rules. For more precise rules, seek an official Scrabble rulebook.
  • For each Scrabble game, there must be at least two-players and no more than four.
  • The person who draws the earliest letter in the alphabet plays first.
  • Once the order of turns is established, each person draws six (We will draw 9) more tiles in that order.
  • The game progresses as each player lays down tiles on the board that make up words that connect to already played words, like making one big crossword puzzle.
  • Tiles can only be placed from left to right or from top to bottom. Words placed diagonally or backwards are not allowed.
  • After each turn, the tile values are added up and placed on the score sheet, and the person draws the number of tiles they used for their last play, always having seven (We will have 10) tiles until all tiles run out.
  • The person with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Activity #1
Movie - Freak the Mighty (Part 3)
1 Hour 5 min - The End

Directions:

  • While you are watching the movie you should record information about the plot, characters, and setting. You will use this information next week to write your compare/contrast mini essay, so make sure you take good notes.
Important: Focus on the Literary Elements we have studied.
  • The Plot's Climax - How do the events in the movie compare to the events in the book? Focus on the climax. Ask yourself, "Did the movie omit, insert, or change any of the events in the climax?"
  • Characterization & Conflict - Are the characters conflicts resolved the same way in the movie as they are in the book
  • Resolution - How do the resolutions compare?

Writing Strategy - Constructing a written response with:
  1. Introduction
  2. Claim (about both the book and movie)
  3. Evidence (from both the book and movie)
  4. Reflection
Each question will be worth 10 points.

Introduction = 2
Claim = 2
Evidence = 2
Reflection = 2
Mechanics = 2
Total = 10

Examples from part 3

Similarities

After reading the book, Freak the Mighty, and watching the movie, The Mighty, I have learned that there are many similarities between the two. One important similarity is the way the climax unfolds. In both the book and the movie Max gets kidnapped by his dad on Christmas Eve and is taken to a hideout in an old ladies apartment. Loretta tries to save Max so Killer Kane starts to choke her. Max has to save Loretta by confronting his father about his own mother’s murder, and Kevin even shows up with a squirt gun to help save the day. In the end Killer Kane gets sent back to prison and Freak the Mighty triumphs. It must have been terrifying for Max to have to stand up to his dad the way he did. I don’t know if I could be as brave as he was.

Differences

Through my studies I have discovered that there are many differences between the book, Freak the Mighty, and the movie, The Mighty. One of the major differences between the book and the movie has to do with the way Kevin’s main conflict with Morquio Syndrome gets resolved. While Kevin still dies in both the book and the movie, the circumstances surrounding his death are completely different. In the book Kevin dies in the hospital after having a seizure on his birthday, and then Max learns about his death from the nurses. He freaks out in the hospital and Dr. Spivak has to explain to Max what happened to Kevin. However, in the movie Kevin dies at home around Christmas time. Max wakes suddenly and Gram tells him that Kevin died in his sleep. Max runs outside to find Kevin is being transported to the hospital in an ambulance. He then freaks out in the streets and runs to the hospital to find out that there was never actually a research lab that was going to give him a new body. If I was Max I would be completely devastated about losing my best friend no matter how I found out about their death.

Writing Example from Part 1:

          There are many similarities between the book, “Freak the Mighty” and the movie, “The Mighty”. The first similarity worth noting is the way the characters are portrayed and developed throughout the story. In the book and in the movie Max feels like he is stupid and does not have a brain.  HE lives with his grandparents because is mom is dead and his dad is in prison. In a like manner, Kevin believes he is a freak because of his physical disability. He is super smart and he talks like a dictionary in the film and in the novel. Another similarity between the book nd the movie is the plot, specifically the event where Max and Kevin go to the fireworks. In both the story and the movie the boys have an encounter with a character named Tony D. which leads to them being chased down. In this scene Kevin acts as the brain telling Max what to do, and Max acts as the body carrying Kevin. They have to work together to save each other from Tony.  Overall, I think the movie does a good job of recreating the plot from the novel for movie goers. If you like the book, you will probably enjoy the film.

          There are many differences between the book, “Freak the Mighty” and the movie, “The Mighty”. The first major difference between the book and the movie is the way Max and Kevin’s friendship begins. In the book their friendship begins when Max helps Kevin get a toy ornithopter out of a tree.  It is this small act of kindness that starts their friendship in the novel, but in the movie their friendship starts when Kevin becomes Max’s tutor. Kevin then gives Max money to take him to the fireworks. Another difference between the two is the setting. When reading the book I picture a small run down town, and in the movie the setting is a large heavy populated city. In my opinion the book does a better job telling the story of Max and Kevin becoming Freak the Mighty. I recommend reading the book before watching the movie.

Block 1 - Similarities

Through my analysis I have discovered that there are many similarities between the book, “Freak the Mighty” and the movie, “The Mighty.” Some similarities include the characters and the conflicts that they face. In both the book and the movie Max is big and tall. His mom is dead, his dad is in prison, he lives with his grandparents, and he feels dumb. In a like manner Kevin is short, uses crutches, and is really smart. Furthermore in the book and movie Max and Kevin have an ongoing conflict with Tony D. and his gang. Also, Max feels dumb, and Kevin struggles with his disability. In my opinion I think that the book and the movie are both really good.

Block 2 - Differences

Through my studies I have learned that there are many differences between the book, “Freak the Mighty” and the film, “The Mighty.” Some differences between them are the setting and the friendship between the characters of Max and Kevin. In the book the setting is in a small town during the summertime, but in the movie the setting is a big city during Max and Kevin’s 7th grade year of school. Their friendship in the book begins when Max helps Kevin with his ornithopter, and then goes to dinner at Kevin’s house. They also go to the 4th of July fireworks. On the other hand, in the movie their friendship starts when Kevin is assigned to be Max’s tutor, and then Kevin pays Max to take him to Riverfest. In my opinion the movie is really good, but you should still read the book first.

Block 3 - Differences

Through my studies I have learned that there are many differences between the book, “Freak the Mighty” and the movie, “The Mighty.” Some differences are the setting, and the friendship between the characters of Max and Kevin. The setting in the book is in a small town in the summertime, but in the movie it is a large city named Cincinnati during the school year. In the book Max and Kevin’s friendship begins in the backyard when Max helps Kevin get the Ornithopter out of the tree. Then Max goes to dinner at Kevin’s house, and takes him to the fireworks on the 4th of July. However, in the movie their friendship starts when Kevin gets assigned to be Max’s tutor, and then Kevin pays Max five dollars to take him to Riverfest. In my opinion the book and the movie are both good, but you should read the book before you see the movie.

Block 4 - Differences

By reading the book, Freak the Mighty, and watching the movie, The Mighty, I have learned there are many differences between the two of them. One main difference between the book and the movie is in the plot and how the two main characters become friends. In the book Max and Kevin's friendship begins when Max gets the ornithopter out of the tree for Kevin, but in the movie Kevin is assigned to be Max’s reading tutor. In addition, in the book Kevin names them Freak the Mighty on the 4th July after the cop asks for their names, but in the movie they get their name when Kevin performs a Knighting ceremony on them in a museum. In my opinion the director of the movie should have made it more like the book.

Have a great day!
